Luke Del Rio having second shoulder surgery

Luke Del Rio will undergo his second shoulder surgery of the offseason on Wednesday, according to Jim McElwain.

“He’ll be fine,” McElwain said. “It’s not major, you what I mean. Going in and fixing the other one that’s broken.”

Del Rio had shoulder surgery on his left, non-throwing shoulder on January 18th. That surgery kept Del Rio out for spring camp.

Del Rio missed Florida’s last five games in 2016 with multiple shoulder injuries. In fact, McElwain commented that after reviewing tape of the loss at Arkansas that he wished he had pulled Del Rio from that game as he was clearly gutting out an injury.

“You’ve heard me say it before, but this guy played and didn’t bow out,” McElwain said Tuesday. “Here’s the thing good thing, we’re going in and getting him fixed right.”

Del Rio finished the 2016 season with 1,358 yards, eight touchdowns and eight interceptions in six starts.

A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
