Getting to Know the 2013 Recruits: Marqui Hawkins

Over the next several weeks, Gator Country will talk with the members of the 2013 recruiting class. We’re asking each recruit 20 questions in an effort to let the fans get to know a little bit more about each player both on and off the field.

The next player we spoke with was Marqui Hawkins.

Hawkins was one of five wide receivers to commit to Will Muschamp and the Florida Gators in 2013. Hawkins committed in May and stuck by that commitment throughout the recruiting process.

Hawkins is a big, physical receiver and with the Gators need for playmakers at wide receiver, he should have a real opportunity to earn playing time right away as a freshman.

Q1: What was the craziest thing you heard during the whole recruiting process?

Marqui Hawkins:  It was a rumor that I had de-committed from Florida and that I had committed to Auburn.

Q2: Why did you choose Florida?

MH: It’s a great school. I looked at the depth chart and saw that they needed receivers to come in.

Q3: What was your favorite part of the recruiting process?

MH: The trips. Going to different schools, meeting different coaches and players.

Q4: Do you have any pre-game rituals?

MH: No sir, I’m not a superstitious guy.

Q5: What is the highlight of your career so far?

MH: Just catching the ball. Anytime I catch the ball.

Q6: Orange or Blue?

MH: Blue. That’s my favorite color.

Q7: What number are you going to wear next year and is there any significance to why you wear that number?

MH: I’m wearing No. 2 because that was my high school number and I put up a lot of numbers wearing it. I picked it because most of the numbers at Carver high school people had already done something in them. Nobody really went big in No. 2 so that’s why I picked it.

Q8: What NFL player do you model your game after?

MH: A.J. Green.

Q9: If you could date one celebrity, who would it be and why?

MH: Candace Parker because she’s athletic and she’s cute.

Q10: Who are your favorite pro sports teams? MLB? NFL? NBA?

MH: The Braves, Patriots and Celtics.

Q11: Xbox or PlayStation?

MH: I’m a Xbox guy.

Q12: If you won the lottery, what would be the first thing that you would buy?

MH: A mansion for myself.

Q13: When you’re sitting in the locker room, getting ready for a game, what’s playing on your IPod?

MH: Rich Homie Quan or Gucci.

Q14: Favorite NFL player?

MH: A.J. Green.

Q15: LeBron or Kobe?

MH: LeBron.

Q16: Who is your favorite former Gator?

MH: Jeff Demps.

Q17: If you couldn’t play football what sport would you play?

MH: Basketball.

Q18: What’s your favorite TV show or channel?

MH: I have two. I watch BET or ESPN.

Q19: What is your favorite sports movie and non-sports movie?

MH: My favorite sports movie would be Remember the Titans and my favorite non-sports movie is All About the Benjamins.

Q20: What’s one thing about you that most Gator fans don’t know?

MH: That I’m a silly person. I love to play but I can be serious at times.

Nick de la Torre
A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
