Oklahoma’s impressive 47-17 dominance of Florida State and James Madison’s shocking 21-16 victory at Virginia Tech caused some major upheaval in the third week of the Gator Country.com Top 25 college football poll.
Ironically, Boise State, which had moved into the third spot in Week 2 of the poll following its 33-30 come-from-behind victory over the Hokies on Labor Day Night, took a huge stumble because of James Madison’s stunner at Blacksburg last Saturday. The Broncos (1-0) fell from No. 3 to No. 10 this week in the GC.com poll, while the Sooners (2-0) jumped from No. 10 to No. 3 this week after their beat-down of first-year head coach Jimbo Fisher’s Seminoles (1-1).
Alabama, off its 24-3 victory over Penn State, and Ohio State, which beat Miami (Fla.) last Saturday 36-24, remained Nos. 1 and 2 in the GC.com poll. Oklahoma moved into third, ahead of Oregon, which moved up four spots from No. 8 following its 48-13 victory at Tennessee, and Texas, which moved up one spot to fifth after its 34-7 victory over Wyoming.
Despite its 38-14 victory over South Florida, the GC.com pollsters (subscribers to the site) dropped Florida from No. 4 to No. 6 heading into this weekend’s trip to Rocky Top to play the Volunteers. Nos. 7-10 this week, in order, are Texas Christian, Nebraska, Iowa and Boise State.
Oklahoma’s seven-spot climb up the poll was not the biggest this week. That belonged to Utah, which moved from No. 22 to No. 13 after its 38-10 victory over UNLV. Stanford moved up eight spots from No. 23 to No. 15 after a convincing 35-0 victory over UCLA at the Bruins’ home field, the Rose Bowl.
Five other schools debuted in the GC.com Top 25 this week: Michigan (No. 18), Houston (No. 21), Oregon State (No. 22), Texas A&M (No. 23) and California (No. 25). Dropping out of the Top 25 but still receiving votes were Georgia, Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, Florida State and North Carolina.
