Florida Gators Pro Day preview

The NFL will descend on Gainesville Tuesday for the Florida Gators Pro Day.

Florida, once again, is loaded with talent and representatives are expected to be in attendance from all 32 NFL organizations. The Gators had eight players invited to the NFL Combine last month, including five juniors that declared early for the draft.

“I’m really excited for our guys to go get in front of those scouts again for some of them and first time for others, and have an opportunity to put on a good show for that,” McElwain said. “There are going to be tons of people here, everything from NFL executives to head coaches to coordinators, obviously, position coaches and scouts. It’s a great opportunity for us to show off what the University of Florida is all about.”

Florida will have 21 former Gators working out during pro day, meaning 13 players will get their first opportunity to work out in front of NFL scouts, coaches and executives. It’s an opportunity for players that weren’t invited to the combine to show those teams they’re worth taking a shot on in the draft at the end of April.

The 21 participants will be weighed and measured before testing in drills ranging from vertical jump, broad jump, bench press, cone drills, 40-yard dash and on-field positional drills.

“Guys can make squads because of their versatility even on special teams,” McElwain said Monday. “This is an opportunity for some of those guys as well to really show what they can do.”

Nick de la Torre
A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
