Emotional day in Swamp for UF-FSU

There will be plenty of emotions Saturday afternoon at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field when state rivals Florida State and No. 1 Florida meet for the 54th time in front of more than 90,000 and a national television audience provided by CBS. For the Seminoles, the game marks the final appearance in The Swamp for their 80-year-old head coach, Bobby Bowden, who is 17-17-1 in his previous meetings with the Gators. Bowden, whose return in 2010 has not been announced, won’t be the head coach when the teams play in Gainesville in 2011. He’d like nothing better than to see the 6-5 Seminoles break Florida’s five-game winning streak in the series, perhaps derailing Florida’s hopes for a second straight national championship but also ending the Gators’ 21-game winning streak, the longest in the nation. For the 11-0 Gators, it is the last game in The Swamp for 23 seniors (another, the late Michael Guilford also will be honored) who will be feted before the game. The biggest cheers, of course, will be reserved for quarterback Tim Tebow, middle linebacker Brandon Spikes, wide receiver Riley Cooper, weakside linebacker Ryan Stamper and wide receiver/kick returner Brandon James, but they all played big roles in a marvelous 46-6 run, the best record ever by a class in Southeastern Conference history that included two SEC championships and two BCS national championships.

GAME 12: FLORIDA STATE AT No. 1 FLORIDA

WHEN: Saturday at 3:30 p.m. ET.

WHERE: Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field (88,548), Gainesville, Fla.

WEATHER FORECAST: Sunny with clouds, high temperature of 66 degrees (lows in the evening between 38 and 42 degrees). Chance of precipitation is 0 percent. Winds are expected from the North from 5-10 miles per hour. Sunset is 5:30 p.m. and means the game will end under the lights, with temperatures falling.

OVER THE AIRWAVES: CBS Sports (Verne Lundquist, play-by-play; Gary Danielson, color analyst; Tracy Wolfson, sidelines) has the telecast; Gator Radio Network has broadcast (see below for more information and stations) with Mick Hubert, Lee McGriff and Steve Babik.

’NOLE NOTES: This will be the last game that 80-year-old Bobby Bowden will coach at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium. In 2011, the head coach is expected to be current offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher. … No decision has been made whether Bowden will be the head coach in 2010 when the teams meet in Tallahassee. … It is, however, the last time the Gators will go up against defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews, who is retiring at the end of this season after 26 years with Bowden. … As FSU head coach, Bowden is 17-17-1 against Florida. … In games at Gainesville, the Seminoles are 7-9, the last victory coming in 2003 by a score of 38-34. … In games played at Tallahassee, the Seminoles are 9-7-1 but are winless since a 31-14 victory in 2002. … Two of the games were played in the Sugar Bowl following the 1994 season (the 31-31 tie at Tallahassee) and the 1996 season (a 24-21 FSU victory). … Florida rebounded from the 1996 loss to win 52-20 and capture its first national championship.  … With its 29-26 victory over Maryland last Saturday, Florida State became bowl eligible for the 28th straight season.

GATOR BYTES: Two big streaks are on the line for Saturday’s game. … Florida has won 21 straight games over two seasons, the nation’s longest winning streak, and the Gators will be seeking their sixth straight victory in the series beginning with a 20-13 victory in Ron Zook’s last game as Florida head coach in Tallahassee. … The 21-game winning streak is the fourth best in SEC history and the longest in the past 15 years. … Florida is 11-0 for the second time in its history (the 1995 team went 11-0 but lost to Nebraska in the Fiesta Bowl). … This is the sixth time that Florida has appeared on CBS nationally, with a seventh scheduled Dec. 5 at the SEC Championship Game in Atlanta. The previous five games were Tennessee (Sept. 19), Louisiana State (Oct. 10), Arkansas (Oct. 17), Georgia (Oct. 31) and South Carolina (Nov. 14). … ESPN College GameDay will be in Gainesville for the 11th time. It will be Florida’s 31st overall appearance in a GameDay game, the most in the nation, and Florida is 20-10. … The Gators have not made a turnover in a game since the Oct. 24 Mississippi State victory. … The defense has held three straight opponents and seven total this season under 100 yards rushing.

GOODBYE: Coach Urban Meyer, the staff and Florida will pay pre-game recognition to 24 seniors who have compiled a 46-6 record in four seasons, the winningest senior class in Southeastern Conference history. The class has won two BCS national championships (2006, 2008) and two SEC Championships (same), three SEC Eastern Division titles (2006, 2008, 2009); compiled a 27-5 SEC record, including 8-0 this season; a 25-2 record in The Swamp; a 14-3 (.823) record vs. ranked teams; and an 11-1 record against principal rivals Tennessee (4-0), Georgia (3-1), Florida State (3-0) and Miami, Fla. (1-0). It also has produced a Heisman Trophy winner (Tim Tebow, 2007) and the national Defensive Player of the Year (Brandon Spikes, 2008). … More important, the group includes 12 SEC Academic Honor Roll members.
