Notable: Brandon Powell was another player who almost wasn’t a Gator. Powell was a Miami pledge before switching his commitment to Florida and enrolling early.

Powell led his high school team to a state championship and was named to the 8A All-State team in Florida as well as being named the Broward County 8A-7A-6A player of the year. Powell’s a speedy back that will fit into Florida’s new spread offense.

Powell visited Florida as a sophomore, but didn’t have an official scholarship offer until Kurt Roper took over as the new offensive coordinator. Former wide receivers coach Aubrey Hill recruited Powell while he was at Florida but Powell didn’t have much contact with the Gators after Hill left two seasons ago. The Florida offer afforded him the opportunity to get away from home and get a true college experience but not too far away from home.

Quotable: Powell told Scott Carter of GatorZone.com that he liked the distance of Gainesville from his home in Broward County; not too far but not too close.

“Once they [Florida] came back and offered me, I was like, ‘yeah, Florida’s the place to be.’ I wanted to get away from home a little bit. It’s not that far from home but far enough.”

Nick de la Torre
A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
