ASK ACK: Young players, BCS and FSU

Each week, former Gator football player and now sports talk radio host Brady Ackerman will answer your questions about the Florida Gators. Whether it’s this week’s game or the game just played, no question is too hot for Brady to handle.

Brady: What did you think of the win over Western Carolina?

It was a good game for looking at young players. I wish the game was scheduled early in the season, but it is what it is. I was very impressed with Mon Williams and the speed in which he ran the ball. I think this offense needs a legit home run threat at running back and it will be interesting to see him compete in spring football. Tim Tebow showed some good arm strength on throws including the ability to zip the skinny post in for a touchdown to Riley Cooper. Dustin Doe is also a fierce hitter who will be a good football player for the Gators. UF did all it could do considering the opponent.

Ack: Why do you think Florida is getting penalized in the BCS?

There are many theories but I believe the phrase is “style points.” UF’s offense has kept them from impressing media types at ESPN which influence a lot of voters. I cannot believe the coaches would not respect the fact that Florida could win a conference facing six top 25 defenses in the same league. Florida also has drawn a tough break with Georgia, Florida State and Alabama not being a little bit better than they were.

Brady: What is the best chance for UF to get to the title game?

Well the best chance may not be the most realistic, but try this one. USC beats Notre Dame and loses to UCLA. Florida wins the next two pretty impressively and jumps Michigan in the human polls because voters decide a 12-win SEC champ is more worthy than a rematch. Notre Dame’s loss would lessen a quality win for Michigan and of course the USC upset would move the Trojans out of the Gators’ way.

Brady: What is your biggest concern with the BCS?

The distraction it causes teams and coaches. I don’t mind it for sports radio it is fun and frustrating at times, but Urban Meyer and his team should be focusing on just FSU this week and Arkansas next week. Some of Coach Meyer’s comments about Arkansas on Sunday will make the Razorback locker room walls next week prior to the SEC title game. Florida needs to get an SEC championship and that should be the first goal and let everything else take care of itself. If the national title does not happen, talk directly to the BCS chairman, who just happens to be the SEC Commissioner Mike Slive.

Ack: Make your case for Florida to go to Glendale.

The Gators have faced the fourth toughest schedule in the country as of this week. If they win out they will have gone 14-1 in their last 15 games. With a win by LSU this week and the Gators next week against Arkansas, UF would have beaten three teams with 10 wins. Florida would finish 3-1 vs. BCS ranked teams and the only loss was at a top ten Auburn team where the Tigers won in spite of not scoring an offensive touchdown.

Brady: What are your early thoughts on FSU?

Defensively the Noles are still well coached and athletic. They are pretty good against the run with Buster Davis and Myron Rolle. Offensively they have been all over the map and probably will look to Xavier Lee who came off the bench last week. Greg Carr is a big receiver but their best receiver is Chris Davis. The Seminoles are not as strong on either line of scrimmage as they have been in the past. Expect FSU to pull out all the stops this weekend with trick plays.
