WR Campbell turns heads at combine

While the Under Armour All-Americans stole the show on Jan. 4, the underclassmen got their chance to shine at the Under Armour Combine earlier in the day.

Some of the top junior and sophomore high school football players in the nation showcased their skills in a handful of combine events as well as in 1-on-1 and 7-on-7 drills.

However, it may have been a 2015 recruit who impressed the most at the combine. Tarpon Springs (Fla.) East Lake wide receiver George Campbell had a strong showing in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The 6-foot-3, 177-pound sophomore clocked in at 4.44 seconds in his 40-yard dash but also was impressive in the drills.

So far, Campbell has only received scholarship offers from Michigan, N.C. State, Vanderbilt, UCF and USF, but he is getting interest from several other programs, including the Florida Gators. At this time, Campbell said all schools are even for him.

“Right now, none of them stand out,” Campbell said. “I keep my options open to every school and I evaluate them all closely.”

Campbell lives only a short distance from the University of Florida campus, and the 2015 prospect holds the Gators in high regard early on in his recruitment.

“[Florida is] a great school and a great environment,” Campbell said. “All of the coaches love me, and Florida is just a great all-around school.”

Despite not having an offer from Florida, the two-sport athlete wants to get back up to Gainesville for a visit after the conclusion of the school year.

“I plan on going back up there sometime in the summer,” he said. “I’m not sure yet when that’ll be, but I’m going to plan it as the time comes.”

He’s only a sophomore, but Campbell receives a lot of recognition for what he does on the football field. However, he’s careful to not let the attention go to his head, even at a young age.

“[The attention] has been good,” Campbell said, “but I don’t let it get to my head. Whatever happens, happens and I’m just going to wait until to my senior year for everything.”
