Week 5 High School football rankings

For the first time this season only one team dropped out of the ESPN HIGH Elite 25 high school football rankings. No. 25 Centennial (Corona, Calif.) may have lost 51-37 to No. 2 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) but did not fall from the nation’s elite. Strength of schedule and a state record offensive output keeps Coach Matt Logan’s team afloat. Centennial winds up the regular playing three of its final four games against Mountain View League opponents.

The HIGH Elite 25’s top 20 teams held their positions, with No. 19 West Monroe, Louisiana’s top-ranked Class 5A team, enjoying a bye week. No. 18 Lakeland (Fla.) completed its suspended game (lightning) Monday night. Thirteen of the 25 teams are from the Southland Region, a traditional hotbed. For the second straight week, the Midwest Region’s teams all won.—Christopher Lawlor
