Summers’ coaching style impresses Armstrong: Florida Gators

The Florida Gators coaching staff has done a good job of getting underclassmen prospects on campus this spring in hopes of getting an early lead in their recruitment.

2018 offensive lineman Christian Armstrong (6-5, 310, Warner Robins, GA High) is one of those underclassmen who has visited this spring and he good time in Gainesville two weekends ago.

“The visit was great, it was a fun time,” Armstrong said of his Florida visit. “At the beginning of the visit we went to the indoor facility and watched them practice and then they showed us the trainers and the weight room. After that we went inside the locker room and met with the coaches.”

Armstrong’s main reason for visiting Florida was to see the Gators practice and the college practice atmosphere impressed him.

“Practice is very good and intense,” he said. “The coaches are really working hard out there trying to get their players better. The players were listening and working hard too.”

The Georgia offensive lineman watched offensive line coach Mike Summers coach his position and he was impressed by his coaching style, plus he likes Summers’ personality.

“I really like how Coach Summers coaches his guys,” Armstrong said. “He made sure to coach up his guys and make sure the offensive line was using the right techniques. He made sure they followed through with their blocks. Coach is a very nice guy and he’s tries to get to know everyone.”

The Gators have been recruiting Armstrong for some time now, as Summers is the lead recruiter for the 2018 prospect.

“Coach Summers says that he thinks that I would fit in well with their program,” he said. “Their tempo is something that I think would be a good fit for me too. He hasn’t really talked to me about a certain position but just says that he wants me to be a Gator.”

Florida Gators head coach Jim McElwain has also been in touch with Armstrong and he has a simple message for the lineman.

“Coach McElwain was the first coach that I talked too from Florida and he was actually the one that offered me,” Armstrong said of McElwain. “He was saying that he really wanted me and that whether I know it or not that I’m going to be a Gator one day. He said that he wants Florida to be my future home so he wants me to get comfortable here.”

The Gators hope to continue to get Armstrong on campus for the next year, but Florida did help its chances with the first visit.

“Florida is very nice and they made sure that I was comfortable and looked after,” he said. “It was just a really good visit and Florida is recruiting me pretty hard right now.”
