Most of the prospects that visited the Florida Gators on Saturday had offers from the Gators but a few guys came to campus in hopes of getting one.
One of those guys was cornerback K.J. Sails (5-11, 165, Gibsonton, FL East Bay) who had the chance to meet most of the new coaching staff.
“The visit went well, real well,” Sails said. “I love the facilities and the coaches were great. They made me feel welcomed and the players were really honest with us. I got to talk to coach [Jim] McElwain, coach [Marquell] Blackwell, coach [Kirk] Callahan and the defensive line coach.”
Sails had never met McElwain before Saturday but he does have a small connection to the Gators head coach and that connection allowed them to have a good conversation on Saturday.
“Coach McElwain was just having a regular conversation because my coach knows him from when he was at Colorado State,” Sails said. “He told me that he wanted to make sure I come back up for a visit. I liked talking to him, he was a laid back guy but to the point. I’ll be back up for a visit.”
Before the cornerback could meet with McElwain the Gators defensive backs coach Kirk Callahan wanted to sit down and talk with Sails about what it would take to get an offer from Florida.
“Me and the DB coach talked a lot and he was saying that he had heard a lot of good things about me,” Sails said. “He said everyone has been talking about me and that he wants to see it in-person this spring. He wants to see me at camp this summer as a cornerback. It’s going to happen soon.”
One thing that helps Florida out here is that Callahan has been recruiting Sails for over a year now and the two are very familiar with each other.
“I love coach Callahan because he was recruiting me when he was at UCF,” Sails said. “Me and him have a great relationship and I like his coaching style a lot. He’s a good guy. Really the whole coaching staff is great.”
During the visit several players talked to the prospects on campus and Sails got a chance to talk one on one with one of the Gators cornerbacks.
“I got to talk to Quincy Wilson and some of the other defensive backs,” Sails said. “Quincy was telling me that the transition from high school to college is a lot because you have to go to class by yourself and get to workouts. Just that kind of stuff.”
INSIDERS BUZZ: Sails is a guy that Florida will continue to monitor this spring and this summer when he camps. Sails is a guy that I could see earning a scholarship once Florida sees him in-person.
