Prep Rewind: Week One

Gator Country spent the weekend getting our first football fix of the 2013 season by watching some high school action. Starting this week, we’re going to present you with the weekly Prep Rewind, where we give you the stats and scores from the weekend’s high school games involving Florida commitments and targets.

Also starting this week, Gator Country is going to name a high school player of the week from the weekend’s action.

Week one’s player of the week is:

Clearwater (Fla.) Central Catholic defensive end Justus Reed

Result: Central Catholic defeated Countryside 22-13 in their preseason game last Friday night.

Stats: Reed had 5 sacks and two tackles for a loss in the preseason game.

Here are the rest of the stats and scores from the past weekend:

Philadelphia (Pa.) Germantown offensive lineman Dontae Angus

Result: Father Judge defeated Germantown 4-3 in an exhibition game in Philadelphia last Friday.

Stats: Angus and his fellow Germantown offensive linemen struggled on Friday to free up the running game.

Casper (WY.) Natrona County defensive end Taven Bryan

Result: Natrona County doesn’t start their season until Friday.

Stats: N/A

Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade Madonna defensive tackle Khairi Clark

Result: Chaminade Madonna doesn’t start their season until September 6th.

Miami (Fla.) Central running back Dalvin Cook

Result: Central defeated Dwyer 44-13 in a game filled with penalties, 39 to be exact.

Stats: Dalvin Cook had two touchdowns, one of which came on a 53-yard punt return that he ended with a back flip. Florida receiver commit Davonte Phillips added a 70-yard touchdown catch that he followed up with a Gator Chomp.

Cross City (Fla.) Dixie County cornerback Duke Dawson

Result: Dixie County dropped their preseason game 26-6 to Fort White on Friday night.

Stats: Stats were not available for this game.

Jacksonville (Fla.) Raines offensive lineman Travaris Dorsey

Result: Raines and Atlantic Coast tied at 7 in their preseason game.

Stats: Dorsey and his varsity teammates only played the first half of the preseason game.

Davidson (N.C.) Day quarterback Will Grier

Result: The defending state champions, Davidson Day started their season with a bang by defeating Albemarle 61-6 on Friday night.

Stats: Will Grier went 16 for 25 with 309 yards passing and seven touchdowns. Grier added 67 yards on the ground and another touchdown on just 6 carries.

Immokalee (Fla.) High cornerback J.C. Jackson

Result: Immokalee defeated LaBelle 48-12 in their preseason game Friday night.

Stats: JC Jackson had a 51 yard touchdown run and also converted a two point conversion with a nice jump ball catch.

Mount Pleasant (S.C.) Wando offensive lineman Nolan Kelleher

Result: Wando defeated James Island 39-12 on Saturday night to open their season with a 1-0 record.

Stats: Kelleher and his fellow offensive linemen lead Wando to a huge offensive night.

Deland (Fla.) High offensive lineman Benjamin Knox

Result: Deland and Flagler Palm Coast tied at 7 in their preseason game.

Stats: Knox played offensive and defensive line and recorded two sacks.

Plantation (Fla.) High cornerback Chris Lammons

Result: Plantation rolled to a 27-10 over Columbus in preseason action.

Stats: Stats were not available for this game but Lammons played both cornerback and quarterback.

Homestead (Fla.) High receiver Ermon Lane

Result: University School beat Homestead 41-21 in a game that was very sloppy from the opening kickoff.

Stats: Lane had just four catches in the game but also had a long punt return that went for close to 40 yards.

Tuscaloosa (Al.) Kingwood Christian tight end C’yontai Lewis

Result: Kingwood Christian won 43-34 over Jackson Academy on Friday night in the opening week of the season.

Stats: Lewis had 131 yards and a touchdown in the win. Lewis caught a 19-yard touchdown catch.

Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) University cornerback Quincy Wilson

Result: University School beat Homestead 41-21.

Stats: Wilson had an interception that he returned for a touchdown while covering Ermon Lane.

Andrew always knew he wanted to be involved with sports in some capacity. He began by coaching high school football for six years before deciding to pursue a career in journalism. While coaching, he was a part of two state semifinal teams in the state of Alabama. Given his past coaching experience, he figured covering recruiting would be a perfect fit.
