TALLAHASSEE – Laremy Tunsil has some time to make his college decision, but he seems to have figured out his top three: LSU, Florida State, and Florida.
The 6-foot-6, 282 pound sophomore offensive tackle from Columbia High School in Lake City took home the Offensive Line MVP at the Tallahassee Nike Combine, and while he says it’s a great feeling, he isn’t satisfied.
“I’m just taking it all in. I need to get better, I need to get a little bit better. Can’t always be perfect,” Tunsil said.
When choosing a school, Tunsil says the main thing he looks at is the opportunity for a strong education. That, and strong, hard-working coaches. But when it comes to the Florida Gators, there’s some extra motivation.
“I was a Florida fan since I was like 6, so I’m very interested,” Tunsil said.
“Great coaching, they’re hard working, they’re just amazing.”
And while he didn’t visit Florida for the Orange and Blue Debut, he did watch it on television.
“They’re pretty good this year, new coaching system, so they’re pretty good,” Tunsil said.
According to Tunsil he was offered a scholarship by the Gators his freshmen year in high school.
Florida State is still on Tunsil’s mind, he says mainly because his former Columbia teammate Tim Jernigan committed there. At this point, Tunsil isn’t sure when he’ll make his decision, he just wants to work hard in the meantime, and see how it all plays out.
TE Kelvin Rainey update
Kelvin Rainey has a lot of attention, but he wants to focus on getting better. The Tallahassee Nike Combine helped the 6-foot-3, 210 pound tight end from Yulee High School do just that.
“I think I did good today, I think I learned a lot today, it was good competition,” Rainey said.
Rainey has lots offers right now, among them are Southern Cal, South Carolina, UGA, Miami, UCLA, Arkansas, and Florida. And Rainey didn’t even hesitate to disclose his top three: South Carolina, Miami, and Georgia.
“They just stay in good competition. They always keep me posted, they always keep calling me to see how I’m doing, what I got going on for the day, and what they got planned for me, you know, big things. They want to see me in their jersey,” Rainey says.
“South Carolina is my favorite right about now, but Miami and Georgia are catching up, so it’s not really like a big lead like it used to be.”
Rainey says he’ll make his decision before his senior season gets started, but for now he’s just sitting back and watching it all play out.
“I’m just kinda coasting it out right about now and relaxing, taking it all in, then I’m going to sit down with the family and think about it,” he said.
And for Rainey, when choosing a program, there are a few key things he looks for:
“A group of kids that want to win it all, that won’t stop working even if we lose,” Rainey said.
“Coaches that are about academics first and then football.”
Dante Fowler solid to FSU
FSU commit Dante Fowler continues to shine on the defensive line as he picked up his second consecutive Tallahassee Nike Combine Defensive Line MVP.
“It’s good, knowing that it’s my second year in a row, so I’m real blessed and I’m happy,” Fowler said.
The 6-foot-3, 238 pound Defensive End from Lakewood High School spent the weekend in Tallahassee and got to attend the Seminole’s spring football game.
“It was a real good game, it was one of the best college experiences I’ve ever had. I liked it a lot, talking to the coaches and meeting some of the recruits and seeing who I’m going to be playing with at Florida State, ” he says.
“It got me really excited. As a matter of fact, we had to walk through the field to get here, so when I was walking through the field I kind of got goose bumps because I know that I’m going to be playing on this field sooner or later.”
Fowler has been a Florida State fan all his life, and he says getting to play for the Garnett and Gold is like a dream come true.
“This is where I’ve always wanted to be. I mean, it’s not like it’s fairy tales, it’s always business,” Fowler said.
“I didn’t commit to Florida State just because I’ve always been a fan.”
Several other schools, including USC, Miami, Florida, and LSU, are coming hard after Fowler, but at the end of the day, he says he knows where he belongs.
“When I came to Florida State it felt like home. I like the coaching staff.”
Fowler still has his senior season to look forward to before donning that Seminole jersey, and he’s eager to shake things up.
“I’m real excited, a lot of things are going to be happening. A lot of things that you don’t expect for me to do,” Fowler said.
“I’m starting running back. So it’s going to be interesting.”
Name sound familiar?
If the name Griffey sounds familiar, that’s because Trey is the son of baseball star Ken Griffey Jr. The 6-foot-2, 185 pound wide receiver from Dr. Phillips High School left the Nike Combine satisfied with his performance, and motivated to get better.
“I did pretty good,” Griffey said.
“They had good coaching out here. Coaches told me what I did wrong, what I need to improve on, so I’m going be working on that in a couple of weeks.”
Griffey hasn’t been thinking too much about college decisions quite yet, he’s got his mind on other things.
“Just focusing on school. School work and getting through spring ball,” he said.
“Just open about schools right now.”
And when it comes to Florida, Griffey says he plans to visit sometime soon.
“Florida’s pretty good,” Griffey said.
“Great players there, I know a couple of players that went there.”
