Friday Night Lights wasn’t just a very productive night for the class of 2016 but the Florida Gators also picked up its fourth member of the class of 2017 before the event even started.
That commit was 2017 receiver Daquon Green (6-1, 186, Tampa, FL Tampa Bay Tech) who gave his verbal to Florida Gators head coach Jim McElwain on Friday afternoon.
“I committed to Coach McElwain after he talked to me and my parents,” Green said of why he committed. “I talked to my parents about everything and they talked to Coach McElwain and he was a guy that we felt stuck by his word and meant what he said. It feels good to be committed to Florida because it isn’t far from home so my family can come and see me play.”
When Green told McElwain and receivers coach Kerry Dixon the news, the receiver says that he made two coaches very happy.
“Coach McElwain was very excited when I told him the news,” he said. “Really the whole staff was excited and Coach Dixon told me that he was glad to have me on board with him.”
McElwain didn’t really talk too much about football to Green and his parents but he simply told them what being a Gator was all about.
“He told me that Florida would always take care of me after I leave the university,” Green said. “He said that he would personally look after me and take care of me if I ever needed anything when I’m in the NFL and after that.”
Before Green made his decision to commit to Florida he had a meeting with Dixon where the receivers coach told Green how he would be used in the Florida offense.
“He said that he was going to get me right and get me ready to fit into the program,” said Green. “He said that I can make an impact at the receiver position and that he thinks I’m a perfect fit for them.”
Even though Green has made the call for Florida, he knows that won’t stop other teams from recruiting him. However, Green doesn’t see his mind changing any time soon.
“I’m solid to Florida and I plan to take most of all of my visits to Florida,” Green said. “I will be back up to Florida for some games this fall.”
INSIDERS TAKE: Green is a guy that is rising on a lot of recruiting boards as he has had a solid camp circuit this summer and has seen his offer list grow to over a dozen. Green paired with Lavarus Tigner is a very good start for the receiver class of 2017.
