Gators Recruiting Mailbag 10/17/12

In this week’s edition of the Maibag, GC’s Andrew Spivey reveals whether there is a cap for how big UF’s class size will be and which prospects are still in play for the Gators.

Spivey also answers questions about how the No. 2 Gators’ success on the field and undefeated record has affected recruiting.

The Florida Gators football recruiting mailbag appears each Wednesday.

Q.) Do you think we get Trenton Brown?

A.) Yes I do. Florida leads for him and he says the Gators will get the last visit.

Q.) By the looks of it, are we picking and choosing at this point? Am I wrong? Are we going to have to tell some “can´t miss” recruits that there is just no space for them?

A.) Right now, Florida is being very patient on who they take. Yes, there could come a point where someone is told there is no more room.

Q.) Were Jalen Ramsey and Max Staver in the stands at the Vandy game?

A.) No, they were not due to them having homecoming at their school.

Q.) Ramsey still in play?

A.) Absolutely, Jalen Ramsey is still in play. Florida isn’t going to give up on him.

Q.) Will there be another running back in this class, totaling 3!!

A.) I’ll say no at the moment, but the coaching staff would like to add one for depth purposes. I just don’t see anyone coming into the class at this point.

Q.) Anything new on Greg Gilmore?

A.) Nothing new on Greg Gilmore. He will visit LSU for the Alabama on Nov. 3 and will announce shortly after that.

Q.) Are Greg Gilmore and Montravius Adams our top 2 choices at DT? What are our chances here – Who is most likely to sign with UF? If we are not able to sign one of those two who is the next most likely candidate at DT? Thanks!!

A.) Gilmore will choose between UF and LSU. Right now, I say Florida has the edge. With Adams, Florida made up ground on him but he needs to visit again. If not one of those then look for Jaynard Bostwick or a JUCO.

Q.) Will we get Adams? Seems like we have a better chance with him than Gilmore. Who do you think our staff would prefer?

A.) The staff likes both a lot, but I think the chances are a little better on Gilmore until Adams visits again.

Q.) Can you comment on David Dawson. Has this been in the works or has the

team’s success helped his recruitment as of late? Are there other prospects like this out there that weren’t necessarily guys who had us high on their list but now do?

A.) This has been in the works for some time now. Dawson first told me in the spring that he was going to visit Florida in July and would switch his commitment possibly. But then another recruiting writer reported – even when asked not to by Dawson – and he decided to cancel the visit. The same thing happened for the LSU game. Dawson finally just decided to make it public that he was de-committing and visiting.

Q.) Do you see our class growing from 25 to possibly 27-28 now?

A.) Yes I do. Honestly, 26-27 is very possible right now for Florida.

Q.) How well do you think we’ll do with the 2014 class? What will be the biggest position needs in that class and are we getting a good look from the ones we want the most?

A.) The biggest position of need next will be a top-notch quarterback and defensive linemen. And yes, I think Florida will have another good class as a lot of 2014 prospects have the Gators high on their board.

Q.) How many total players do you think will be in this class?

A.) Twenty-six or 27 are the numbers I’m at right now.

Q.) Andrew is 27 still the hard cap on this class or if we got really lucky might we be willing to go one or two over that?

A.) I wouldn’t say hard cap, but I don’t see them going over that. But if the right guys want in they could go over that.

Q.) Hearing that we may want to sign 26-27 in this upcoming class, what underclassmen do you think will opt for the Pro’s after this season?

A.) Matt Elam, Sharrif Floyd, Jordan Reed and maybe Jelani Jenkins.

Q.) As it stands today do you think we land another receiver in this class?

A.) As of right now I’m leaning to saying no, but a good visit by Demarcus Robinson could change things big time.

Q.) Will WR D. Robinson be in this class or M. North ?

A.) As of today, no. But a good visit from Demarcus Robinson or a return visit from Marquez North could change things.

Q.) Who are the early entry candidates at this point in time?

A.) Kelvin Taylor, Adam Lane, Daniel McMillian and Tyler Moore are all guys that say they are trying to enroll early.

Q.) If we are going to get a second cornerback, who would be the most likely to sign with the Gators between Ramsey and Wiggins as of today?

A.)Tough to say but I would say Shaq Wiggins as of today but that could change.

Q.) How do you feel about Alex Anazone being in this class? If not Alex, how do you feel about our chances with LB Trey Johnson who is currently committed to Auburn?

A.) I think Anzalone will be in this class, and I don’t think Florida would take Johnson at this point for that reason.

Q.) Am I or am I not one of the coolest posters on GC?

A.) You wish Steele. That award goes to myself or gatorbaitin08 for his comments about Harris.

Q.) What sort of likelihood is there of UF receiving commitments from current commits to other schools who have “suddenly” developed interest as a result of UF’s on field success and rise in the rankings?

A.) It’s possible for sure. There are a few names in the works but nothing concrete at this time.

Q.) Are we (UF) interested in any other (there is already the talk of Alex Collins opening his recruitment) Cane commits?

A.) No, that’s the only Miami commitment that Florida is interested in.

Q.) I am ecstatic at our performance, but it is way more than I even hoped for let alone expected. Do you see much impact if some air should come out of the balloon? I know. What a Debbie Downer, but Debbie has her skill set; just not anything we can talk about.

A.) Honestly, no because as you said Florida has done better than expected. Now it would let some of the positive air out if Florida was to lose three games, but I don’t see that happening.

Q.) Andrew, would the coaches take Daniel and Ebnezier? Also, who do you think will be the final DT in this class?

A.) No it’s one or the other preferably Elijah Daniel. And yes, I think Florida will get another defensive tackle.

Q.) There is a running back in Haines City that made Adam Lane look silly when they went against each other in Dacorious Law, he is a junior this year, are the Gators recruiting him and if not why?

A.) Yes, the Gators have him on the radar and will evaluate him after his junior season.
