Dorsett has Florida near top of his list

WINTER PARK — One of the most electric prospects on offense in the state of Florida, Phillip Dorsett (5-10, 165, Fort Lauderdale, Fla. / St. Thomas Aquinas) had a chance to bring his speed over to the track Saturday at the FHSAA Class 4A state track finals at Showalter Field.

Dorsett was the second leg on the 4×400 relay team for St. Thomas Aquinas that took third place in the final event of the evening. St. Thomas Aquinas went on to win the team championship over Columbus High School of Miami by a score of 65-49.

During the season, Dorsett competed in the several events, including the triple jump, long jump and 200 meters in addition to his participation in the 4×400 relay.

On Saturday, Dorsett also had a chance to update the status of his recruitment.

“It’s going really well right now,” he said. “I haven’t narrowed down my list, but I have around 20 offers as of today.”

The University of Florida was one of the first programs to extend an offer to Dorsett, and he likes what he’s seen from the Gators.

“I like how (Florida) airs the ball out. They throw it a lot,” Dorsett said of Florida after watching a spring practice in Gainesville back in March. “They’ve changed the offense with (John) Brantley at quarterback. I like what they’ve done.”

Paired alongside fellow top wide receiver prospect Rashad Greene, Dorsett led St. Thomas Aquinas in receiving yards last year with 594 on 30 receptions. In all, Dorsett was responsible for 10 touchdowns (9 receiving, 1 rushing) over the course of the 2009 season.

Wide receivers coach Zach Azzanni is recruiting Dorsett for Florida, and he has been a critical component in keeping the Gators in the mix for the talented South Florida product.

“He’s young and he relates to us well,” Dorsett said of Azzanni. “He’s one of my favorite recruiters because I can actually talk to him and have a regular conversation with him.”

While Dorsett hasn’t quite gotten around to narrowing things down, he does know that the Gators will be in the mix when it comes time to do so.

“Yeah, Florida will be in my top five,” he said. “I’ve been to Miami and checked them out. I like Georgia, North Carolina and Florida. Those are the main schools right now.”

Expect a much smaller list of favorites from Dorsett in the very near future.

“Right after the spring I’ll narrow it down,” he said.

With football right around the corner, Dorsett plans to make an impact on the field this spring and then start getting a better feel for the colleges he is strongly considering by making several stops on the summer camp circuit in June.

“I’m looking to get up to Ohio State, Georgia and North Carolina,” he noted. “On my way (to the other schools) I’m going to stop by Florida.”
