Auburn commit enjoys first time in the Swamp: Florida Gators

The Florida Gators hosted several prospects committed to other schools on Saturday for senior day in the Swamp.

Auburn athlete commit Tray Bishop (6-3, 193, Dawson, GA. Terrell County) was one of those prospects in town and he enjoyed his first game in the Swamp.

“It was first time down here for a game, it was pretty good,” Bishop said of his visit to Florida. “I liked the atmosphere. They tell me that I’ll look good in the right Blue and Orange. I was really just seeing how things were operated during game day. I really liked it.”

Even though the Swamp wasn’t as full as usual, Bishop liked the environment and the Gators defense on Saturday.

“I loved the Swamp,” he said. “I liked how they were in the game, it’s always fun watching Florida’s defense play anyway. The secondary is savage and I like it.”

Bishop originally committed to Auburn as a quarterback, but he has now decided that he wants to play on the defensive side of the ball.

“They want me at defensive back,” he said. “I like that [when asked if he likes the position] because I’ve made up mind that I want to play defensive back. The question I asked myself was do I want to get hit or do I want to lay the hit.”

Defensive backs coach Torrian Gray and head coach Jim McElwain have made Bishop a priority and they each have a message for the Auburn commit.

“I talk to Coach Gray and Coach Mac the most,” he said. “Coach Mac’s favorite line is that I look good in the right Blue and Orange. Coach Gray always says get over so I can get coached up by one of the best defensive back coaches in America.”

The Gators history as DBU is something that has been in Bishop’s thoughts and he says you have to consider Florida.

“Florida is known for producing defensive backs so if you want to be great you should at least consider them,” Bishop said. “I look at their past and it plays a little part.”

With Bishop choosing to play defensive back many have questioned where Auburn stands now but he says nothing has changed at this time.

“Auburn is recruiting me as a quarterback,” Bishop said. “Not at the moment [when asked if it affects his recruitment there. I’m just staying open because you never know what’s going to happen.”

Bishop had originally planned on trying to early enroll but he now says he won’t and he’s trying to setup official visits.

“I’m going to set my official visits, probably like two weeks from now I’ll set my officials,” he said. “They’re probably going to be in January after the Army game is over.”

Heading into official visits Bishop says he has three schools that are still in play for his commitment.

“It’s still the same with them [Florida] and Georgia, they’re neck and neck,” Bishop said. “It’s really just those three schools, Auburn, Florida and Georgia right now.”

INSIDERS TAKE: Bishop said he wants to make his final decision on signing day after taking his official visits. Right now Florida seems to have the momentum due to Bishop wanting to play safety.
