Former Florida Gators Getting Summer Shot at NBA

Two former Florida Gators basketball players will be getting their shot in the National Basketball Association this summer.

Michael Frazier II and Scottie Wilbekin were both given opportunities to join summer leagues for NBA teams.

Frazier (6’4”, 194 lbs.) was signed with the recent champions, the Golden State Warriors and will play in the Las Vegas summer league from July 10-20.

If signed (and none of the rumored trades pan out) Frazier would join two former Florida Gators in David Lee and Marreese Speights.

The Warriors recently shot their way to their first NBA championship in four decades by going small and putting an emphasis on shooting.

That bodes well for Frazier who as a shooting guard averaged 12.1 points per game during the 2014-2015 season and shot a 380 average from three-point land.

As each season went though, Frazier’s offensive averages actually went down, such as his three point shot, which went from .447 his freshman season to that .380; and his field goal percentage, which dropped from 46% to 42%. His defensive numbers all went up though during his junior and final year, along with his free throw percentage.

Scottie Wilbekin (6’2”, 176 lbs.) signed with the Orlando Magic for their summer league play, which will take place in Orlando from July 4-10. Wilbekin also went undrafted out of college as well in 2014, but was signed with Cairns Taipans in Australia where he shined, averaging 15.4 points and 4.3 assists per game, eventually winning the clubs Defensive Player of the Year and Most Valuable Player.

He then went on to finish the 2014-2015 Greek Basket League season with AEK Athens, where he averaged 8 points, 2.3 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game.

Chris Walker (6’10”, 220 lbs.) who like Frazier opted to leave school early for the league went undrafted and as of publishing time, has yet to be signed with an NBA summer league.

Walker came to the Gators as the third best recruit from the state of Florida behind only Joel Embiid (Kansas University and now Philadelphia 76ers) and Kasey Hill (now University of Florida guard).

His numbers took a significant jump from his shortened freshman year to his sophomore year, with his points along taking a leap from an average of 1.9 to 4.7.

He finished his sophomore year with 108 rebounds along with 36 blocks.

As the summer goes on, we will keep GatorCountry updated with any roster changes affecting these three along with all other former Florida Gators basketball players in the league.
