Just peachy! Post-Peach Jam Confidential

Florida would like to sign two more big men and attention is focused on Elloy Vargas (6-10, 220, Plantation, FL American Heritage), Xavier Gibson (6-10, 230, Dothan, AL Northview) and Angel Garcia (6-10, 225, East Chicago, IN East Central). The Gators are also in good shape for JaMychael Green (6-8, 225, Montgomery, AL St. Jude) but he has indicated that he wants to take all his official visits before he makes a decision. That could eliminate him because the other three seem likely to make their choices very soon.

Vargas has been listing Pitt as his favorite, but most observers expect that he would commit to Florida if the Gators showed him a little love. Coach Billy Donovan and associate head coach Larry Shyatt watched Vargas this weekend in a New Jersey tournament (Vargas plays for Team Breakdown). From what Gator Country is hearing, Florida may have supplanted Pitt as the leader. He has tremendous offensive skills and can play both the high and low post. He also has enough range on his jump shot to move out to the wing and take three-pointers.

Back in January of 1969, the late, great Jack Hairston, then the sports editor of the Jacksonville Journal, called me on the phone one night and asked me if I wanted to work for him. I said yes. The entire interview took 30 seconds. It's my experience that whenever the interview lasts 30 seconds or less, I get the job. In the 48 years that I've been writing and getting paid for it, I've covered Super Bowls, World Series, NCAA basketball championships, BCS championship games, heavyweight title fights and what seems like thousands of college football, baseball and basketball games. I'm a columnist and special assignments editor for Gator Country once again, writing about the only team that ever mattered to me, the Florida Gators.
