Franz Beard’s Basketball Confidential

The Florida Gators have zeroed in on one big man as they try to put together the final pieces of their basketball recruiting class of 2008. If the Gators can add one more big man as the fourth commitment, it would give Florida the luxury to wait it out for talented Eloy Vargas, who may not make his decision until the spring.

Colton Iverson (6-10, 245, Yankton, SD) is getting the full-court press from the Gators and it looks like the best prospect from South Dakota since Mike Miller just might follow in the footsteps of the best prep player in state history. Iverson’s list of favorites includes Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota, Nebraska and Florida and apparently the Gators have elbowed their way to the top spot.

Franz Beard
Back in January of 1969, the late, great Jack Hairston, then the sports editor of the Jacksonville Journal, called me on the phone one night and asked me if I wanted to work for him. I said yes. The entire interview took 30 seconds. It's my experience that whenever the interview lasts 30 seconds or less, I get the job. In the 48 years that I've been writing and getting paid for it, I've covered Super Bowls, World Series, NCAA basketball championships, BCS championship games, heavyweight title fights and what seems like thousands of college football, baseball and basketball games. I'm a columnist and special assignments editor for Gator Country once again, writing about the only team that ever mattered to me, the Florida Gators.
