Franz Beard’s Basketball Confidential

While the Florida Gators are waiting on word from top 2009 target Kenny Boynton 6-2, 180, Plantation, FL American Heritage, #13 ESPN Top 100), they’re already working the class of 2010 hard and they might have a commitment coming this month. Look for good things out of Patric Young (6-8, 200, Jacksonville, FL Paxon), who had a lights out July on the AAU circuit, visited unofficially for Florida’s season opening football win over Hawaii.

Florida is Young’s clear leader. It helps that he’s best buds with 2011 UF commit, stud point guard Austin Rivers (6-3, 180, Winter Park, FL). Young will be visiting UF again for the Ole Miss game although there is a possibility that he will make yet another visit this weekend for the Miami game to hang around with Rivers, Boynton and Brandon Knight (6-3, 180, Fort Lauderdale, FL Pine Crest). It isn’t certain that Boynton and Knight will be in Gainesville this weekend, but as of today (Wednesday) they were both talking about it.

Rivers, it turns out, is taking seriously his role as a Florida recruiter. He is in constant touch with Boynton and Knight. All three of these kids are close friends and there is no doubt they are seriously considering the possibility of playing together at the next level.

Franz Beard
Back in January of 1969, the late, great Jack Hairston, then the sports editor of the Jacksonville Journal, called me on the phone one night and asked me if I wanted to work for him. I said yes. The entire interview took 30 seconds. It's my experience that whenever the interview lasts 30 seconds or less, I get the job. In the 48 years that I've been writing and getting paid for it, I've covered Super Bowls, World Series, NCAA basketball championships, BCS championship games, heavyweight title fights and what seems like thousands of college football, baseball and basketball games. I'm a columnist and special assignments editor for Gator Country once again, writing about the only team that ever mattered to me, the Florida Gators.
