Franz Beard’s Basketball Confidential

Right now, the roster would indicate the Florida Gators will have only one opening for the basketball recruiting class of 2010 so all eyes are on Brandon Knight (6-3, 175, Fort Lauderdale, FL Pine Crest), but recruiting is a strange game so don’t be shocked if there is at least one more opening. That would mean some sort of attrition such as an early entry to the NBA or a transfer, but as we’ve seen everywhere in the country, there’s a steady flow of players on the move at all times.

After Knight, I think the Gators top target will be Patric Young (6-8, 200, Jacksonville, FL Paxon). He looked like a polished star up at UConn’s elite camp when he dunked on NBA star Rudy Gay on more than one occasion. Young has grades and a nice academic pedigree since Paxon is one of the top high schools in the country.

The Gators are also high on Justin Jackson (6-8, 200, Montverde, FL Montverde Academy) and Okaro White (6-8, 180, Clearwater, FL) but it’s Knight and Young that are clearly at the head of the class.

QUIET WEEK ON THE BOYNTON FRONT: There is nothing new to report on the Kenny Boynton (6-2, 180, Plantation, FL American Heritage #3 ESPN Top 100) front except the Dookies are really hoping and praying that KB will start drooling all over himself at the thought of playing for Coach K. At this point in time, that seems highly unlikely. Boynton is solidly in Florida’s corner right now. In recruiting things can and often do change overnight so anything is possible, but at this moment, Boynton looks solidly UF.

Back in January of 1969, the late, great Jack Hairston, then the sports editor of the Jacksonville Journal, called me on the phone one night and asked me if I wanted to work for him. I said yes. The entire interview took 30 seconds. It's my experience that whenever the interview lasts 30 seconds or less, I get the job. In the 48 years that I've been writing and getting paid for it, I've covered Super Bowls, World Series, NCAA basketball championships, BCS championship games, heavyweight title fights and what seems like thousands of college football, baseball and basketball games. I'm a columnist and special assignments editor for Gator Country once again, writing about the only team that ever mattered to me, the Florida Gators.
