Franz Beard’s Basketball Confidential

Perhaps it’s time that the state of Florida was given more consideration as a top recruiting ground for high school basketball talent. No, it’s not New York or California and it’s not even Georgia, which right now might be producing more top flight talent per capita than any state in the union, but Florida is starting to emerge as a fertile recruiting ground.

It’s never going to be more obvious than in the next three years when the state has a legitimate chance to produce the top guard in the country. Every time Kenny Boynton (6-2, 180, Plantation, FL American Heritage) takes the court it seems he shows something new in the best scoring arsenal of any guard in the country. The bigger the game, the more highly regarded the guard he’s going against, the more likely it is that KB will light it up. Don’t be surprised if he’s considered the number one guard recruit in the country for the Class of 2009 by December. He’s already in the top three.

Brandon Knight (6-3, 185, Fort Lauderdale, FL Pine Crest) plays AAU ball with Boynton on Team Breakdown, last year’s AAU national champs. He took Pine Crest to a state championship back in March. While Boynton is a scoring guard that can play the point, Knight is a pure point that can go off for big nights as a scorer when he gets hot. He’s got a streaky shot which is about the only knock on his game. Ever since the eighth grade he’s been considered the top player in his age group and he should emerge as the number one player in the nation for 2010.

Franz Beard
Back in January of 1969, the late, great Jack Hairston, then the sports editor of the Jacksonville Journal, called me on the phone one night and asked me if I wanted to work for him. I said yes. The entire interview took 30 seconds. It's my experience that whenever the interview lasts 30 seconds or less, I get the job. In the 48 years that I've been writing and getting paid for it, I've covered Super Bowls, World Series, NCAA basketball championships, BCS championship games, heavyweight title fights and what seems like thousands of college football, baseball and basketball games. I'm a columnist and special assignments editor for Gator Country once again, writing about the only team that ever mattered to me, the Florida Gators.
