The 2009-2012 USA Basketball Men’s Junior National Team Committee announced this morning that Florida men’s basketball coach Billy Donovan will be the head coach of the 2013 USA Basketball Men’s U19 World Championship Team.
This past summer, Donovan coached the U18 squad and came away with a first-place finish after ending the FIBA Americas U18 Championship with a 5-0 record.
Current VCU coach Shaka Smart and Gonzaga coach Mark Few will serve as the team’s assistant coaches. Smart was a former assistant under Donovan at Florida and both were assistants on Donovan’s U18 team last summer.
It’s such an honor to have this opportunity to represent our country with USA Basketball once again, and I’m really looking forward to it,” Donovan said in an interview with GatorZone.com’s Chris Harry. “Mark Few and Shaka Smart are both outstanding coaches. I have tremendous respect for them both and am glad for another chance to coach alongside them.”
The 2013 FIBA U19 World Championships will take place from June 17 through July 7 in Prague, Czech Republic.
