HOOVER, Ala. – Just as right-field play almost eliminated the top-seeded Florida Gators baseball team from the SEC Tournament, it later secured their 5-4 elimination-game victory over Arkansas Thursday at Regions Park.
Right fielder Jonathan Pigott made a diving catch in the right-center gap and turned into a double play, allowing the fourth-ranked Gators, who were stunned in their opening game by Louisiana State 10-6, to live for another day.
“Off the bat, I thought it was a double in the gap,” said Florida freshman Austin Maddox, who was moved to third base late after starting the game at first. “All of a sudden, he comes in with a big play.”
The catch came with runners on first and third after Florida closer Kevin Chapman allowed a single to Matt Reynolds and hit Tim Carver with a pitch. On a 1-1 count, James McCann of Arkansas rocketed Chapman’s delivery toward right center, where if it were to get past the Florida outfielders, might have tied the game and put McCann in scoring position with just one out.
“I thought it was in the gap,” McCann said. “Carver, with good speed on first, was on the run. We gave ourselves a chance to win there.”
At the ping of the bat, Pigott, who pinch-hit for third baseman Cody Dent in the seventh and went to right to replace Preston Tucker so he could move to first, took off. He dove and the made the catch and then popped up and threw the ball in to second baseman Josh Adams. Brett Eibner, who pinch-ran for Reynolds, tagged up and scored from third base.
But Carver, who was trying to score, couldn’t get back to first to beat Adams’ relay to Tucker, who caught the ball and pumped his first as the Gators survived. More fist pumps and chest bumps ensued as the Florida dugout emptied onto the field to shake hands and celebrate the victory. Usually, the post-game celebrations are between the pitcher’s mound and second base. This one, however, took place in short center where Pigott and senior center fielder Matt den Dekker were already celebrating.
“That was a heck of a play,” Florida head coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “Honestly, when the ball was off the bat, I didn’t think he was going to get to it. I thought it was going to be a gapper and the game would be tied at that point.”
O’Sullivan realigned his defense in the top of the eighth inning, putting Pigott in right field and moving Preston Tucker from right to first base. Ironically, it was Pigott’s play that saved the day for Tucker, who made two mistakes earlier in the game that almost cost the Gators.
The first mistake hurt the worst. In the top of the fifth inning, Florida was ahead 4-1 and had two outs but Arkansas had two runners on base against starting pitcher Alex Panteliodis. Arkansas center fielder Collin Kuhn hit a high fly ball to right field. Tucker barely had to move to catch the ball, but it went directly into the sun. The ball dropped a few feet from Tucker, and two runs were able to score on Kuhn’s triple, cutting Florida’s lead to 4-3.
Tucker later dropped a fly ball hit over his head, allowing leadoff batter Tom Hauskey to reach second base in the seventh.
“I know Tuck had a tough day in the field, but he’s a good outfielder,” O’Sullivan said. “He made a mistake. You have to check the sun every inning and have glasses ready to go. That was a mistake he won’t make again. We’ve got a lot of confidence in him playing the outfield.”
Derrick Bleeker ran for Hauskey, but he wouldn’t score because the Florida defense regained its poise. With two outs, Bleeker on third and Matt Vinson on first after a walk, reliever Jeff Barfield came out of the Florida bullpen to replace Panteliodis.
Kuhn hit a sharp line drive between shortstop and third base that seemed destined for left field. Florida shortstop Nolan Fontana broke towards the hole, sliding to his knees and fielding a short hop at the same time. The freshman bounced to his feet and threw to Adams at second base for the final out of the inning, holding Florida’s 4-3 lead.
“It was a big play,” Fontana said. “I was just staying ready, staying alert.”
Panteliodis moved to 9-2 on the season after lasting 6.2 innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out five. If Tucker caught the routine fly ball that he lost in the sun, Panteliodis’ would have allowed only three hits and one run.
“That type of stuff happens all the time,” Panteliodis said. “I wasn’t happy with it, but we got out of the inning.”
Barfield remained in the game to throw a scoreless eighth inning, getting three groundouts on only seven pitches.
After the Gators scratched across one run in the bottom of the eighth inning on a squeeze bunt by Josh Adams with the bases loaded, Florida went to Chapman to close it down. With an estimated 30 radar guns tracking his every pitch, the left-hander struggled with the command of his pitches.
“Today he wasn’t really sharp,” O’Sullivan said. “That was the worst he’s thrown in an awful long time as far as his command is concerned. I’ve got 100 percent confidence in him every time he comes in the game.”
The Gators struck first in the bottom of the first off starter Mike Bolsinger (6-4). Fontana led off with a walk, moved to third on a pair of groundouts and scored as Maddox singled to right. In the third, Fontana singled with one out, moved to second when den Dekker walked and scored on another Maddox single. Designated hitter Brian Johnson then drove in den Dekker for a 3-0 lead.
Bolsinger was replaced by left-hander Drew Smyly to start the fourth inning. The sophomore has been the Razorbacks’ ace all season, but a blister on his finger caused the Arkansas training staff to treat it with caution since the Razorbacks likely have locked up a home NCAA Regional next weekend. Smyly threw the final five innings, allowing only two runs (one earned) and striking out six Florida hitters.
“(The blister) was fine the whole time,” Smyly said. “I told coach (Dave van Horn) I wanted to get some work in the tournament. We didn’t want the blister to rip open. We had some medical glue that we put on it.”
With the win, O’Sullivan improved to 4-8 against the Razorbacks in his three seasons. Arkansas is the only school in the SEC with a winning record against the coach.
On Friday evening, Florida (41-14) plays fifth-seeded Vanderilt, which dropped a 7-5 decision to eighth-seeded Louisiana State. The first game Friday at 4 matches Auburn and Mississippi. Freshman right-hander Hudson Randall (6-3, 2.99 ERA) will start for Florida.
