Power surge

HOOVER, Ala. — Jonathan Pigott’s power stroke has been missing all season. After starting the season on the bench, Pigott has earned his way into the starting lineup and Thursday morning, Florida’s right fielder came through in a big way when the Gators needed him the most with two home runs that doubled his output for the entire season.

Pigott’s solo home run in the first inning gave the Gators the early lead, but his three-run home run in the sixth inning served as the knockout punch, giving the Gators another day in the Southeastern Conference Baseball Tournament and sending OIe Miss home on the heels of a 12-2 embarrassment that was called after eight innings due to the mercy rule.

“He’s one of those players that it really brings a smile to your face when he does well,” Florida head coach Kevin O’Sullivan said after the Gators (39-19, 1-1 SEC Tournament) survived the elimination game.

Pigott has taken a long, tedious road this season, starting the season on the bench behind Riley Cooper. When Cooper slumped at the plate, Pigott still had to sit while younger brother Daniel took over and gave the Gators the perfect hitter for the two-hole in the lineup.

Jonathan gave the Gators some productivity when he was inserted into games late in the season, convincing O’Sullivan that he still had a few hits left in his bat. When Daniel fractured a finger diving back to first base during the last regular season series against Kentucky, the right field job was handed over to Jonathan for good and he’s taken advantage of the opportunity.

“He had a tough go-about it early on, but it never affected his work ethic,” O’Sullivan said. “To be honest with you, it probably made him work even harder. I know his though process is, ‘when I can get an opportunity to play, I’m going to be ready.’ That’s exactly what has happened.”

Thursday Pigott became the second player in school history to hit two home runs during an SEC Tournament game. It was the first time any player has hit two homers in an SEC Tournament game since Todd Linden of LSU did in 2001.

“I got my chance and tried to take advantage of it,” Pigott said. “I worked hard when I wasn’t playing and tried to get back in there as hard as I could.”

Pigott’s stats (.357, 4, 26) may be deceiving to opposing teams because they don’t know much about him. Ole Miss head coach Mike Bianco admitted that he didn’t expect that big of a performance from the junior outfielder.

“(The second home run) was off a 90-plus fastball,” Bianco said. “He’s got two home runs on the year and then he hits two through the wind on a field as big as anywhere he’s probably going to play this year. They just had a great day offensively.”

Pigott’s three-run home run in the sixth gave Florida an 8-2 lead and the impetus to pour it on. Following Pigott’s dinger, Buddy Munroe, who is 8-21 with one home run and seven RBI in his career against Ole Miss, fisted a two-out single into center field to score Josh Adams and Tyler Thompson to make it a 10-2 game.

The Gators put their final two runs on the board in the eighth. Preston Tucker singled home Avery Barnes for one run and Tucker scored from second when Jerico Weitzel beat out an infield single and Ole Miss first baseman Matt Smith flipped to ball to the pitcher’s mound, thinking that Weitzel was out and the inning was over.

Tucker went 3-5, driving in three runs and scoring two of his own. The freshman now has 77 RBI, only three short of the school record set by Ryan Shealy in 2002. Tucker has multiple RBI in five straight games and has 21 multiple-RBI games on the season, second to Matt LaPorta’s school record of 22 in 2005.

Tucker also hit his 12th home run in the fourth inning. The left-hander stayed back on a first-pitch curve ball from Ole Miss left-hander Brett Bukvich and hit it off the foul pole in left field, right above the 340-foot sign on the wall.

“I got the pitch I was looking for, but I was really trying to get on base,” Tucker said. “We were down by one at that point. I just wanted to get on base. I was hoping it would stay fair and it did.”

After the homers by Pigott in the first and Tucker in the fourth, the Gators stretched out the lead in the fifth. Back-to-back hits by Munroe and Mike Mooney, who reached base for the 29th straight games, started the inning. Barnes then stayed on an 0-2 slider and lined it over the head of the third baseman to score both runners. Barnes would later score on a Tucker double.

“In the fifth, I just fell behind the first two hitters and they make you pay,” Bukvich said. “I had to throw the fastball behind in the count and those two guys got hits. I made a good pitch to Barnes … I thought. He did a good job of hitting it and taking it the other way. I struck him out on a slider the last two times. I figured if I could get another one out there far enough he would swing, but he did a good job of taking it the other way.”

For Coach O’Sullivan, it all started on the mound. Freshman Anthony DeSclafani went 5.2 innings, allowing only two runs on five hits, while moving to 6-3 on the season. The right-hander was hit hard in his previous two outings at LSU and against Kentucky, but he settled down to give his team a great start in an elimination game.

“This was a big game,” DeSclafani said. “I always have a little bit of nerves, but I just wanted to keep doing the same things I’ve been doing. I just made good pitches when it counted and tried to give my offense a chance to score some runs.

DeSclafani gave up a run on an RBI groundout in the first inning, followed by an RBI single in the second inning, but then he retired nine of the ten batters he faced.

“Florida’s pitching did a good job,” said Ole Miss leadoff hitter Jordan Henry, who went 2-4 with a stolen base. “They threw strikes and got us with their off-speed stuff.”

No hitter in the Ole Miss lineup recorded more than one hit off DeSclafani, and none of the five hits he allowed were for extra bases. Only one hitter, Henry, got two hits for the Rebels in the entire game.

“(DeSclafani) did a great job,” said Smith, who went 1-3. “We saw a lot of fastballs. Sometimes he would leave one up and we would just miss it.”

The only threat of a big inning from Ole Miss came in the sixth inning, as Florida led 8-2. DeSclafani allowed a single to Logan Power to start the inning. After Kyle Henson flew out, Smith singled into left field to move Power to second. Matt Snyder flew out for the second out of the inning before a pitch hit Zach Miller to load the bases.

O’Sullivan decided to make a change and hand the ball to senior reliever Patrick Keating, who threw two pitches before getting David Phillips to hit a comebacker for an easy out at first to end the last threat by the Rebels.

In Keating’s last six outings, he has pitched 9.1 innings for an 0.99 ERA.

“I’ve said for the last two weeks that [Keating is] a huge part of this pitching staff,” O’Sullivan said. “He came in with the bases loaded, and that’s exactly what you want a senior or veteran to come in and stop the momentum because you never know what happens. One ball gets up into the air and gets out, and next thing you know they’re right back in the ballgame.”

The 12 runs scored by the Florida offense are the most in the SEC Tournament since 2000 against South Carolina. The Gators also improved to 25-1 when scoring more than eight runs.

The Florida-Ole Miss match-up pinned two teams against each other that were believed to be fighting for one of the top eight national seeds in the NCAA Tournament. Of course the match-up wasn’t expected to happen in the loser’s bracket, but it does keep Florida alive in the hunt for a national seed.

“We didn’t talk about that this morning, but we did before we came up here,” O’Sullivan said. “That’s one thing I’ve always done is explain everything to them and let them know what’s in front of them. We obviously can’t control the committee and how they feel, but this is certainly a step in the right direction.”

Florida now advances to take on the loser of the Arkansas-Georgia game, which is scheduled for 5 p.m. CDT Thursday. The Gators will take on either of the two teams at 4 p.m. eastern Friday.
