Tide rolls Gators home from Hoover

HOOVER, Ala. – On a day the Florida Gators needed two victories against Alabama to advance to the SEC Baseball Tournament championship game, they weren’t even close to getting one.

The Crimson Tide jumped ahead early and road Adam Morgan’s complete game to a 5-2 victory Saturday in front of 11,542 fans at Regions Park.

“The story of the game was Adams Morgan,” Florida head coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “He was outstanding. He pitched ahead in the count, didn’t walk anybody and we had too many fly-ball outs. He pitched up and down in the zone. If he pitches like that next weekend (in the NCAA Regionals), whoever plays against him is going to have some trouble.”

The fourth-ranked Gators, the SEC champions, finished the tournament with a 2-2 record and fell to 42-15 heading into the NCAA Tournament. The two teams that beat the top-seeded Gators – No. 8 Louisiana State and No. 7 Alabama – will play Sunday for the SEC Tournament title and the automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament though both are expected to receive bids when they are announced at mid-day Monday.

Morgan‘s complete game came in seven innings as the length of the game was determined before the game because of inclement weather in the area. He gave up only six hits and two runs while striking out five Florida hitters.

Three weeks ago when the teams met in Tuscaloosa, Morgan lasted 4.1 innings, allowing 10 hits and six runs. The version of Morgan that the Gators saw Saturday wasn’t even close to that one.

“He mixed his pitches well, and we didn’t adjust,” Florida center fielder Matt den Dekker said. “We hit a lot of fly balls and gave him easy outs.”

The Alabama offense took control of the game from the beginning against Florida starter Tommy Toledo. They scored a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly and extended the lead in the second inning on a two-run double by Andrew Miller.

After a two-run infield single by Jake Smith in the third inning, the Crimson Tide had a 5-0 lead and put the game in cruise control.

Toledo made his first career postseason start for the Gators, and only his second start since being hit in the face with a line drive on March 14 against Charleston Southern.

He lasted 3.2 innings, giving up seven hits and five runs (four earned) while striking out three batters. The line might not look pretty, but O’Sullivan was happy with the way Toledo (3-2) threw the ball. The right-hander did hurt himself in the first inning by throwing away a pickoff to first, and the run later scored.

“I don’t think we struggled that bad,” O’Sullivan said. “He threw the pickoff away, but he hadn’t been out there. The double down the line (by Miller) was hit hard, but I don’t think (Toledo) was hit terribly hard. There were some things that occurred in the game because he hadn’t been out there in a while. I’m encouraged about the way he threw the ball.”

But the best sign of the day, and possibly of the whole tournament, for Florida came out of the bullpen. After a good freshman season last year, Nick Maronde has been inconsistent at best. His control has struggled all season – he has walked 24 and hit nine batters in 25.1 innings before Saturday.

However, over the same span, Maronde had 34 strikeouts and Saturday he padded that number. The left-hander from Lexington, Ky., came in and fell behind Alabama second baseman Ross Wilson with a 3-0 count, and it looked like his season-long struggles weren’t over.

But then something clicked. Maronde battled back to a full count and got a strikeout. He then jumped ahead of Alabama home-run leader Clay Jones with an 0-2 count and wasted no time putting him away for his second strikeout of the inning.

Third baseman Jake Smith came to the plate and Maronde jumped ahead of him 1-2. He then worked the count full before Smith began fouling off pitches.

“We were making light of it in the dugout because he threw seven straight strikes.,” O’Sullivan quipped.

After sitting on the fastball and even hitting a few long foul balls, Maronde used Jones’ aggressiveness against him. The sophomore dropped a 3-2 changeup off the plate on the 11th pitch of the at-bat, as Smith swung over the top of it.

“That’s what I’m pulling out of this game,” O’Sullivan said. “That’s a huge, huge positive for us going into next weekend.”

Maronde was scheduled to be the closer coming into this season, but his inconsistencies put Kevin Chapman into the role. Maronde has used some of the recent blowout games to work on his pitches, but a loud, pro-Alabama crowd seemed to be the last place he would find it.

“He was just getting the ball out of his glove a lot faster,” O’Sullivan said. “We’ve been working hard with him. He’s very talented. It’s not unusual that a good player goes through some tough times.”

An RBI double from Jonathan Pigott in the fifth inning and an RBI groundout by den Dekker in the sixth inning were the only times the Florida offense ever threatened. Six different players had the six hits.

The Gators leave Hoover with a healthy team and a bullpen and starting rotation that got enough work to stay fresh. But there are still question marks in the field.

“The two major questions for our team going into next weekend are third base defensively and offensive production from our corner outfielders,” O’Sullivan said. “Those are the two things we’re really going to have to zero in on.”

The Gators head home for the first time since winning the regular-season SEC Championship last weekend in South Carolina. Host sites for NCAA Regionals will be announced on Sunday, and the full 64-team bracket for the NCAA Tournament will be announced on Monday afternoon shortly after noon.

The Gators (42-15) are expected to be a national seed, meaning they will play host to a regional tournament and, if they win that, a Super Regional (best-of-3 series) before the College World Series.

“We’re looking forward to getting home,” O’Sullivan said. “We’re 28-3 at home and have played awfully well at home in front of our home crowd. It’s been good for us to be on the road though. To be challenged on the road at South Carolina and then come here and lose our first game, then fight back and battle with our backs against the wall. From a coaching perspective, all we wanted out of this tournament was to feel good about our team heading into next weekend, and I certainly do.”
