Singer strong as Gators take series from Miami

For the third season in a row the Gators take the series victory over the Hurricanes of Miami.
Friday and Saturday night the Gators got special performances from both of their starting pitchers to lead them to victories.

Last night it was Alex Faedo, but tonight it was Brady Singer (2-0, 0.44 ERA).

He was electric tonight, throwing 7.2 innings, striking out 11, and surrendering 5 hits and scattering 3 walks while throwing 109 pitches and 76 strikes.

“Unbelievable start for Brady,” said head coach Kevin O’Sullivan, “fastball was special tonight, 93-96, both sides of the plate. Got into a really good rhythm.”

Singer was only in trouble once, with runners on 1st and 3rd in the fifth inning, but the first pitch after a mound visit resulted in a double play ball to get out of the inning, and a huge fist pump out of the sophomore.

“It was a good game, it’s Florida versus Miami, it’s a big series. I was just really excited, it was a fun game,” said Singer.

More from Singer, “it was just one of those days where everything felt right, the strikeouts are a good thing.”

Once against there was a great starting pitching performance, but also once again there was little doing from the offenses.

Actually, it was nothing doing from Miami’s offense for the second night in a row, and the first time in the series history (since 1940) that the Gators have shutout Miami in consecutive games.

On the Gators side of things, two solo home runs were all the cushion Singer needed.

Junior Mark Kolozsvary’s first hit of the season was a line drive home run to left in the third inning, and sophomore Jonathan India mammoth blast almost left the park in the sixth.

“We really needed that, someone to step up for the team and it just happened to be me,” said India on his second homer of the season.

The Gators will rely heavily on their starters throughout the year.

“Our starting pitching has a chance to be dynamite, and those first two starts were as good of starts as we’ve had here. I’m awfully excited about that,” said Kevin O’Sullivan.

Frank Rubio came on to get the save in back to back nights, and looks to have the closers role, for now at least.

“It was really good to see Frank (Rubio) come back out again after last nights performance… I just thought Frank earned the right to finish it, especially with a two run lead,” said O’Sullivan.

The Gators are 9-3 in their last 12 meetings with the Canes, and will go for the sweep tomorrow at 1pm. Jackson Kowar(1-0 1.59 ERA) will be on the mound as the Gators will look to get their bats going in the series finale.
