Since 1990, UF has dominated SEC

Wait ‘til next year. For decades that was the rallying cry of the Florida Gators, who came close many times but never won a Southeastern Conference championship that counts in the record books until 1991 in the second year of Steve Spurrier’s 12-year run as the Florida head coach. Since 1990, the Gators have won eight SEC championships and three national championships, the best run of any team in the league. During that 19-year span, Florida is 189-51-1, a full 14 wins ahead of second place Tennessee.

When it comes to pure speed, nobody in the country has faster running backs that the Florida Gators. What the Gators don’t have, however, is a pound it between the tackles back who can dominate a game in the fourth quarter. If there is such a thing as a glaring weakness on Florida’s 2009 team, that’s it right there.

This was the game that had been circled for more than a year Florida -- Georgia in Jacksonville. Georgia entered the season favored to win a national championship, but by the time the Bulldogs left Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, they were scrambling to secure a spot in the Capital One Bowl. From Brandon Spikes' bone-jarring de-cleating of Knowshon Moreno to Tim Tebow's domination on the offensive end, the Gators made a statement as they walked away with a 49-10 win that left no doubt Florida was indeed the Beast of the SEC East

Some of the best high school football in the entire country is played Miami-Dade County where there seems to be an endless pipeline of talent just waiting for Division I schools to sign to scholarships. While Miami, Florida State and Florida might have an in-state advantage, there are so many top players every year in Miami that nearly every Division I team in the country makes an effort to recruit the area. It's said that third team All-Dade players are superior to the All-State types in many states across the country.

With Tim Tebow as the starter and John Brantley as the backup, the Florida Gators are as strong at the quarterback position as any team in the Southeastern Conference. Beyond those two, however, there are concerns with depth. The Gators will carry only three scholarship quarterbacks on the roster in 2009.

The Southeastern Conference might not have many household names at the running back position, but from top to bottom, the league has plenty of talented and versatile backs. With the increased emphasis on spread formations, there should be no lack of productivity in the SEC this year and few leagues can match the overall speed with burners like Jeff Demps and Trindon Holliday on hand.

WEST PALM BEACH --- Considering how long Matt Elam and Gerald Christian have been on the recruiting radar, it's hard to fathom that they have another year of high school football left to play. Elam has been a top prospect ever since his sophomore year at Palm Beach Lakes, where he established himself as one of the top young safeties in the country. As a junior he moved to Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer where he teamed up with Christian to take the Panthers deep in the FHSAA Class 5A playoffs before a controversial 32-20 loss to Plant ended their season. Their college choice set (both are committed to Florida), Elam and Christian are determined to redeem 2008 by bringing home the state championship that eluded them.

ACK: Gators biggest challenges in West

It appears that the top challengers for Florida in the SEC may come from the West in 2009. Most preseason magazines and polls believe Alabama, Ole Miss and LSU are top fifteen teams heading into the season. While I have been on record as saying UF should coast through the East there is not really any team in the SEC that does not look flawed. Alabama must establish an offensive line. Ole Miss has never been there and must improve in the back seven. LSU only beat two teams in the regular season in 2008 that had winning records. If those teams are top fifteen teams then you know the rest of the East has its flaws.

A national championship in football led a program-record tying 12 Gator athletic teams among the nation’s top 10 in 2008-09 national competition, propelling the University of Florida to a third place finish in the 2008-09 Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup. The finish matches the second-highest for the Gator program, second only to Florida’s tie for second in the 1998-99 standings.
