The month of May couldn’t have gone any worse for Kevin O’Sullivan and the Florida baseball team. The Gators kicked the month off by getting swept at LSU and then lost five of their remaining nine games the rest of the way to compile a 4-8 record for the month.

It was a free fall that all could have been forgotten had the Gators been able to put up a good showing in Hoover, Alabama in the SEC Championship.

Georgia (21-32/7-20 SEC) scored multiple runs in three different innings to defeat Florida (29-27/14-16 SEC), 9-2, to claim the weekend series between the Eastern Division rivals on Saturday afternoon at Foley Field. The Bulldogs used a 14-hit offensive surge and three home runs to subdue the Gators in the teams’ regular-season finale. With today’s result, UF earned the eighth seed for the 2013 SEC Tournament and will begin play on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. ET in Hoover, Ala., versus ninth-seeded Texas A&M (30-25/13-16 SEC).

Although the Bulldogs loaded the bases in the first inning against freshman right-hander Eric Hanhold (Palm Harbor, Fla.) (0-4), they came away empty-handed. Sophomore Nelson Ward (2-for-5) led off with a single up the middle but was erased on a fielder’s choice by senior Curt Powell (2-for-5). Another fielder’s choice by sophomore Hunter Cole forced Powell at second base before senior Kyle Farmer (3-for-5) had a base-hit into center field and sophomore Jared Walsh (1-for-2, two RBI) walked to fill the bags. Hanhold escaped the jam with a strikeout of senior Brett DeLoach.

After taking the series opener in Athens and ending Georgia’s post season aspirations, the Florida Gators (29-26, 14-15) dropped the second game of the series to the Georgia Bulldogs (20-32, 6-20) on Friday night, 3-1. The loss evens the series at a game apiece and puts the Gators in jeopardy of dropping their third straight conference series.

Florida was able to get on the board first in the second inning. Justin Shafer led the inning off with a walk, followed by a strikeout from Zack Powers and a ground out from Vickash Ramjit that moved Shafer to second base.
Freshman Harrison Bader (Bronxville, N.Y.) snapped a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the ninth inning and Florida (29-25/14-14 SEC) added an insurance run on a balk to defeat Georgia (19-32/5-20 SEC), 4-2 on Thursday night at Foley Field. Bader was 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI, sophomore right-hander Ryan Harris (Jupiter, Fla.) (5-3) worked out of a jam in the eighth inning to earn the win, while sophomore right-hander Johnny Magliozzi (East Milton, Mass.) registered the final three outs to notch his 12th save.

With the game deadlocked at two runs apiece entering the final frame, senior Vickash Ramjit (Miami, Fla.) (2-for-3, two runs) led off with an infield single off of UGA redshirt junior Patrick Boling (3-7) and sophomore Josh Tobias (Greensboro, N.C.) (2-for-3) followed with a base-hit down the right-field line that pushed Ramjit to third base. Bader moved the visitors in front with a single into left center that brought home Ramjit and a sacrifice bunt by freshman Brady Roberson (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) left UF with a pair of runners in scoring position. After senior Cody Dent (Boynton Beach, Fla.) flew out to left field, Boling was charged with a balk that scored Tobias for a 4-2 advantage.

Baseball drops series to Auburn

Auburn junior Damek Tomscha broke a scoreless tie in the fifth with a solo shot and junior Ryan Tella connected on a three-run dinger in the sixth to lead the Tigers (31-20/11-16 SEC) to a 4-1, series-clinching win over Florida (28-25/13-14 SEC) on Mother’s Day at McKethan Stadium. The Tigers ended a four-series losing streak to the Gators dating back to a 2-1 triumph during the 2006 season in Gainesville.

After redshirt freshman right-hander Justin Camp threw 4.1 shutout innings in his starting debut, sophomore Chase Williamson (3-0) gave up one run over 2.2 innings to pick up the win and junior Terrance Dedrick registered the final six outs to collect his eighth save of the season and second of the series. Freshman Eric Hanhold (Palm Harbor, Fla.) (0-3) surrendered just one run and four hits over a career-high five innings for Florida.

“I thought Eric (Hanhold) did a nice job,” head coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “I thought he threw the ball well, we just didn’t get the bats going today for whatever reason. Auburn’s pitcher (Justin Camp) was in his first career start, he mixed his pitches and threw his breaking ball for strikes early in the count. We weren’t able to put some good swings on them. It was a 1-0 game for awhile there, but, obviously, the sixth inning hurt us, pitching-wise.”

After Florida sophomore Josh Tobias (Greensboro, N.C.) tied the game with a two-out, three-run homer in the ninth inning, redshirt sophomore Zack Powers (Seffner, Fla.) delivered a pinch-hit double to score freshman Harrison Bader (Bronxville, N.Y.) from first base with the winning run as the Gators (28-24/13-13 SEC) stunned Auburn (30-20/10-16 SEC), 5-4, to even the teams’ weekend series on Saturday night at McKethan Stadium. The start of the game was delayed for one hour and 42 minutes due to heavy rains and unplayable field conditions.

With UF down to its final three outs and trailing 4-1, sophomore Casey Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) started things off by being hit by a pitch from Tiger junior starter Michael O’Neal but was erased at second base on a fielder’s choice by sophomore Taylor Gushue (Boca Raton, Fla.). After sophomore Justin Shafer (Lake Wales, Fla.) went down swinging, senior Vickash Ramjit (Miami, Fla.) sliced a single into right field for two Gators aboard. Tobias launched O’Neal’s next pitch into the left-field bleachers to knot the score at 4-4 with his third round-tripper of the campaign.

Auburn (30-19/10-15 SEC) tallied three runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and totaled seven runs with two down to defeat Florida (27-24/12-13 SEC), 7-4, on Friday night at McKethan Stadium. Tiger junior left-hander Conner Kendrick (4-3) carried a shutout into the seventh inning before the Gators trimmed the deficit to 6-4. Junior Terrance Dedrick registered four strikeouts over 2.1 scoreless innings to pick up his seventh save of the season. Junior Ryan Tella (2-for-5) broke a scoreless tie with a three-run homer in the fourth, while junior Dan Glevenyak (3-for-5, two runs) and freshman Jordan Ebert (2-for-3, two runs) drove in two runs apiece.

“Credit Auburn’s hitters; they put some good swings together,” head coach Kevin O’Sullivan said. “They were able to score seven runs with two outs. We got some advantage counts from offensive standpoint. On our side, we just didn’t put good swings on some pitches and probably chased out of the zone a little bit. Auburn’s hitters did a really good job tonight and their starter [Conner Kendrick] kept us off balance. We had a plan coming into the game. We felt like we wanted to get his pitch count up a little bit. It was just one of those nights. We just have to come back ready for tomorrow.”

Baseball earns one-hitter over FAU

A six-run fifth inning and dominant pitching lifted Florida (27-23) to a 7-1 victory over Florida Atlantic (28-20) on Tuesday night at McKethan Stadium. Sophomore left-hander Bobby Poyner (Wellington, Fla.) (3-2) limited the Owls to one run and one hit over a career-high six innings and he was followed to the mound by freshman Danny Young (Boca Raton, Fla.), sophomore Ryan Harris (Jupiter, Fla.) and sophomore Johnny Magliozzi (East Milton, Mass.), who each threw a perfect frame. The Gators retired the final 13 FAU batters in securing head coach Kevin O’Sullivan’s 250th victory at Florida.

“I thought their starter [Jake Meiers] did a really nice job,” O’Sullivan said. “He threw some quality changeups and breaking balls and he kept the ball down, but Bobby [Poyner] matched him pitch-for-pitch. He pitched outstanding for us tonight. Our relief pitching was really good – holding a team like FAU to one run and one hit over nine innings. We were obviously pleased with the effort. There were a lot of big at-bats tonight. Credit their starter, he did a great job, but we hung in there and the fifth inning was a big one for us offensively.”

“I felt pretty good,” Poyner said. “I was trying to throw the ball to the plate and let the defense play. We made really good catches in the outfield, played really great on defense and didn’t make any errors.”

No. 3 LSU (43-6/19-5 SEC) used a 19-hit offensive outburst to hand Florida (25-23/12-12 SEC) an 18-6 setback on Saturday afternoon at Alex Box Stadium to take all three games of the series. The Tigers collected their fourth-consecutive win and handed the Gators their fourth loss in a row. Junior JaCoby Jones (2-for-5) had a career-high six RBI, including a grand slam during an eight-run sixth inning, while freshman Alex Bregman went 3-for-5 with three RBI and scored three runs for the hosts.

The Gators jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning against junior right-hander Ryan Eades (8-1) on an RBI triple by sophomore Taylor Gushue (Boca Raton, Fla.) (2-for-3) and a sacrifice fly by sophomore Justin Shafer (Lake Wales, Fla.). Sophomore Casey Turgeon (Palm Harbor, Fla.) (3-for-4) had singled up the middle with one down and Gushue lined a triple off of the wall in right field to put the visitors on the scoreboard. Shafer followed with his fourth sacrifice fly of the season to straightaway center field to bring home Gushue.

LSU sophomore right-hander Aaron Nola (9-0) registered his fourth-straight complete game with a four-hitter as the third-ranked Tigers (42-6/18-5 SEC) defeated Florida (25-22/12-11 SEC), 5-0, on Friday night at Alex Box Stadium. The victory clinched the weekend series for the Western Division leaders, while the finale will be televised on ESPN2 tomorrow at 1 p.m. Nola permitted four singles in going the distance, with three strikeouts and one walk.

Junior JaCoby Jones (2-for-4) provided the Tigers with a 1-0 lead in the second inning against UF sophomore left-hander Bobby Poyner (Wellington, Fla.) (2-2) on an RBI grounder. Senior Raph Rhymes (2-for-3) had opened the frame with a single into left field and junior Christian Ibarra was hit by a pitch before junior Ty Ross moved his teammates over with a sacrifice bunt. Jones brought home Rhymes with a ground ball to second base to open the scoring.
