On Tuesday morning Floridians awoke to news that Hurricane Irma had been upgraded to a Category 5 Hurricane overnight. While Irma is still thousands of miles off the coast of Florida, most tracks have it impacting the state near the weekend.
The Florida Gators are scheduled to play host Northern Colorado this Saturday at 7:30 p.m. but the city of Gainesville could be experiencing tropical storm strength winds by late Friday night or early Saturday morning.
No decision has been made on potentially rescheduling or cancelling the game with Northern Colorado as of 2 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon.
“We continue working with university and government officials to monitor the progress of Hurricane Irma and determine the impact of the storm on our events in Gainesville this weekend,” said Steve McClain, Florida’s senior associate athletic director for communications. “Additionally, we are communicating with the Southeastern Conference office and keeping them updated.”
The Gators were forced to postpone its meeting with LSU and ultimately cancel a game against Presbyterian in 2016 due to Hurricane Matthew.
Florida Governor Rick Scott has already declared a state of emergency and warned all Floridians to “prepare for the worst.”
