The Florida Gators and Gray impressed Gibbs on Saturday

New Florida Gators defensive backs coach Torrian Gray has been recruiting nonstop since he arrived in Gainesville in February from Virginia Tech.

On Saturday Gray saw some of that recruiting pay off, as the Gators hosted big time cornerback Deangelo Gibbs (6-2, 207, Loganville, GA Grayson) on an unofficial visit.

“It was good, it went real good for me,” Gibbs said of his Florida visit. “I got to tour the facilities, see the new indoor facility and talk to the coaches. I got to meet and talk to some of the players it was cool. I also got to watch the whole practice, it went good.”

Gibbs spent a lot of time at practice watching the defensive backs and he liked Gray’s coaching style during practice.

“Practice was very organized and it was a fast pace practice,” he said. “I got to watch Coach Gray coach the defensive backs, he’s a great coach. He was interacting with the players and teaching them. He was real cool.”

The defensive back has talked with Gray a lot over the phone, but he was impressed when he finally got the chance to meet the defensive backs coach.

“That was my first chance to meet Coach Gray,” Gibbs said. “I was like wow he’s amazing. I know he coached some NFL guys but since he’s new I haven’t had a chance to evaluate him like I want too. I’m going to get a chance to do that and talk to him more now.”

Gray doesn’t mince words while recruiting Gibbs, as he lets the big time athlete know that he’s needed in Gainesville.

“He just tells me that he wants me down there bad,” he said. “He was saying that they need more defensive backs, I was like that’s pretty cool. He was just pretty much telling me to come down there and replace some guys that are leaving this year.”

Not only is Gray recruiting Gibbs hard but head coach Jim McElwain and linebackers coach Randy Shannon are also working him hard.

“He [Gray] reaches out to me daily on social media,” Gibbs said. “He’s recruiting me real hard to come down there. Coach Shannon and Coach McElwain and pretty much the whole staff are also recruiting me hard.”

Gibbs got the chance to sit down with McElwain on Saturday and he once again reminded the defensive back that the Florida Gators want him.

“Coach McElwain said the same thing really, he just wants to get me down there,” he said. “He wants me to play for Florida pretty much and he says that there is a need for me down there.”

With over 20 offers already Gibbs has his pick of which school he wants to go to, and while he says he’s in no rush to decide, he does have a few visits coming up soon.

“Pretty much all of the schools that have offered me are recruiting me hard,” Gibbs said. “I’m still pretty open right now and I plan to announce my decision after the season. I have some visits coming up this spring and I think I’m going to Florida’s spring game.”

INSIDERS TAKE: Gibbs is one of the best defensive back in the country and fits the mold for what Torrian Gray wants at defensive back. Florida really helped its cause on Saturday due to the great visit Gibbs and his father had.

  1. Getting Gibbs would be HUGE. He could come in and start at one of the CB spots that Tabor and Wilson currently start at. If they could get 4 out of Gibbs,Wade,Poole,Wilson,Blades,Brini, and Davis, it would be crazy. I would love to see them get Gibbs,Wade,Poole,Wilson and Brini. I know it’s gonna be next to impossible, but it would be the dream team of CBs. Add in Barrett and Bell at Safety and I would be doing back flips.
