REPORTS: Everett Golson visits Florida Gators

Former Notre Dame quarterback Everett Golson, visited Gainesville to check out the Florida Gators football program as the graduate transfer continues his search for a school to play out his final year of eligibility according to a report from Andy Staples of Sports Illustrated.

According to ESPN, Golson has a list of 10 schools that he would be interested in transferring to and he would be eligible to play immediately under the NCAA graduate transfer rule. The list includes Alabama, Florida, Florida State, South Carolina, Georgia and UCLA.

Golson visited Florida State over the weekend and made the short trip to Gainesville following that visit. One stipulation that would make transferring to the SEC tricky — but not impossible — is that the SEC would require Golson to petition for a waiver to play due to his past disciplinary issues at Notre Dame. Golson was suspended at Notre Dame for reportedly using “poor judgment on a test”, resulting in the quarterback being suspended for the fall semester. As Staples points out in his story, the rule was designed to counteract players who were trying to transfer to avoid disciplinary action. Golson served out his suspension over a year ago and was allowed back on to the team.

The Florida Gators have scholarships available and are very thin at the quarterback position. With a sophomore in Treon Harris and a redshirt freshman in Will Grier currently battling for the starting quarterback position, a veteran quarterback — who played in a national championship game — would be a welcome addition to the roster.

As the starting quarterback for the Fighting Irish in 2012, Golson led Notre Dame to a perfect 12-0 record and a berth in the BCS National Championship Game. After serving out his suspension in 2013, Golson returned as the starter — a role he filled all 12 games — in 2014. Golson completed 256-of-427 pass attempts (60.0%) for 3,445 yards, 29 touchdowns and 14 interceptions in 2014. He added 114 rushing yards and eight scores on the ground.

Despite a solid season, it appeared that Golson would not be named the starter coming out of spring practice this season and he asked to be released from his scholarship in order to transfer. Bruce Feldman of Fox Sports reported that Notre Dame would not allow Golson to transfer to a school on Notre Dame’s 2015 schedule and Florida fits that bill.

  1. Golson ‘—-would be a welcome addition to the roster’. Golson lost his job to an underclassmen. So, like any true competitor, he quit. Golson ‘—-would be a welcome addition to the roster’. According to ND the young man had ‘—past disciplinary issues’. According to published reports, Golson was a cheater in the classroom. Has this once proud program fallen to such depths? Rather than waste time entertaining this young man, perhaps Coach Mac and staff should be out there trying a little harder to recruit a couple of QBs with character and ability. Is that too much to expect?
