Recapping the Florida Gators softball team’s perfect Judi Garman Classic

GatorCountry.com brings you this week’s Florida Gators softball review as the Gators finished the week with a 3-0 record. In this recap we will break down the past week’s games, plus name a player of the week from the past week.

The number two ranked Gators went on the road to California to participate in the Judi Garman classic. The Gators were supposed to play five games in the tournament but both of Friday’s games were cancelled due to weather.

Florida is now 9-1 on the year and head home to start SEC conference play next weekend.

Results

  • Florida defeated Loyola Marymount 13-0- winning pitcher Aleshia Ocasio
  • Florida defeated Cal State Fullerton 10-0 – winning pitcher Kelly Barnhill
  • Florida defeated Baylor 4-0- winning pitcher Kelly Barnhill, Aleshia Ocasio got the save.

Offensive leaders

Junior Amanda Lorenz had a career day against Loyola Marymount and in the tournament she collected seven RBI’s and hit two home runs. Lorenz had five hits and scored four runs in the three games last weekend.

Freshman Hannah Adams scored six runs and drove in three runs in the tournament. Adams collected three hits in total in the three games last weekend.

Senior Nicole DeWitt hit three home runs in California and in total drove in six runs. DeWitt scored four runs and collected five hits as she continues to hit well this year.

Kayli Kvistad, Jordan Matthews and Jordan Roberts all added home runs last weekend as the Gators hit eight home runs in the tournament.

Pitching

Tim Walton and Florida Gators softball pitching coach Jennifer Rocha threw all four pitchers this weekend as the Gators had breathing room late in the first two games of the weekend.

Junior Kelly Barnhill threw 10 innings of scoreless ball as she struck out 21 batters in her time in the circle. Barnhill and Aleshia Ocasio combined for a no-hitter against number 8 ranked Baylor on Saturday.

Senior Aleshia Ocasio pitched five scoreless innings last weekend as she picked up a win and a save in the tournament. Ocasio struck out 10 batters and allowed only one hit in her time in the circle.

Player of the week

Junior outfielder Amanda Lorenz was the leader for the Gators at the plate this weekend and knocked in seven RBI’s to help pace the Florida offense to three big wins. Lorenz now leads the Gators with 25 RBI’s on the year.

Florida doesn’t have a midweek game this week as the Gators are on spring break and preparing for the start of SEC play this weekend.
