The Florida Gators have two linebackers committed in the class of 2016 and on Monday defensive coordinator Geoff Collins went to visit one of those commits.
Linebacker Jeremiah Moon (6-4, 210, Hoover, AL High) is one of the top prospects in the state of Alabama and on Monday he had the chance to practice in front of Collins.
“It was good to see Coach Collins at my practice, he just came by to watch a couple of our drills in practice,” Moon said. “He stayed for about 45 minutes or so and he was just talking to my coaches about me. He told my coach to have me call him so I did on Monday night.”
When Moon called Collins that night, per the coaches’ request, Collins delivered a familiar, simple message to the Florida commit.
“He was just telling me that he can’t wait to coach me at Florida,” he said of Collins message. “He was the first coach to offer to me so he was just saying that he can’t wait till I get to Gainesville. He always tells me that he only has five linebackers on scholarship and that he needs more linebackers at Florida.”
If you have watched the Florida Gators this year, you know that linebackers are a huge need and Collins is giving Moon the opportunity to come in and compete for a job as a freshman.
“Coach Collins has said that he will try me at both inside and outside linebacker to see which works out better,” Moon said. “It has a lot to do with how my body reacts to college and things like that but I know that I have a chance to play early there.”
Moon committed to Florida in June during Friday Night Lights and earlier this month he made his visit back to Gainesville since making that commitment.
“My dad and I went down there for the Ole Miss game and it went good,” he said. “It was an awesome experience. They have nice fans and everyone was offering us to come to their tailgate and things. It was a great time at Florida.”
Ever since Moon committed to Florida, he has said that he wanted to take visits to other schools but he has yet to set any of them up.
“I haven’t set up my official yet but I know that I’m going back to Florida for when they play Vanderbilt for their homecoming game,” Moon said. “I will probably take my official to Florida after the season. I also plan to take an official visit to Mississippi State and South Carolina.”
Despite wanting to take visits to other schools, Moon says that his pledge to Florida is getting stronger as the season goes on.
“I’m solid to Florida and they are still recruiting me the hardest right now,” he said. “I’m not shutting the door on anybody but the season is definitely helping Florida out a lot.”
INSIDERS TAKE: Moon has a great relationship with Geoff Collins and I think it will be hard to flip him away from Collins and the Gators, especially with the linebacker need at Florida right now. The key is to continue to get Moon on campus.
