Jeremi Powell leaves Florida Gators football team

Florida Gators redshirt junior linebacker Jeremi Powell has decided to end his Florida Gators football career, sources have told Gatorcountry.com. Powell intends on graduating this spring and is looking to move on to the next phase of his life after football. The redshirt junior did not travel with the team to Orlando for the Citrus Bowl.

Powell, a linebacker from Pinellas Park High School, came to Florida in the 2012 recruiting class as a four-star recruit. Even though Powell did not see any game action as a freshman, he was awarded the scout team player of the week five times during the 2012 season.

Powell played in the first seven games of the 2013 season before an injury ended his season during the Missouri game. Powell once again battled an injury in 2014, playing in seven games mainly on special teams. Powell’s role increased this season after Alex Anzalone was lost for the season with a shoulder injury. Powell played in 10 games, totaling 11 tackles and one for a loss in 2015.

Powell’s departure leaves the Gators with just Anzalone, Jarrad Davis, Matt Rolin, Daniel McMillian, Rayshad Jackson (a freshman who took a redshirt last season) and early enrollee David Reese at linebacker for spring practice.

A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
