Under the bright sun at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Fla., two perennial state powerhouses faced off in the FOX Sports Kick-Off Classic – Godby High School (Tallahassee, Fla.) and Henry B. Plant High School (Tampa, Fla.).
The game featured some of the top talent, including 2014 Florida State commitment BUCK/DE Jacob Pugh of Godby, and Jake Fruhmorgen, a class of 2015 offensive tackle with offers from just about everyone, including the Florida Gators.
While Godby dominated the game from the beginning and won in a route (35-16), Fruhmorgen was one of the only bright spots on the Plant team, even during some of his struggles.
Let’s look at some of the tape and analyze both the good and the bad.
Fruhmorgen played all game, rotating between left tackle and right tackle, but seemed to play more on the right side.
Fruhmorgen, at 6’5″, 256-pounds, has an outstanding frame for a tackle. He has a well-built frame that could add an additional 20-30 pounds without him looking fat. He has good mass and carries his weight well.
Fruhmorgen usually has pad level, although he is sometimes sloppy. Fruhmorgen has a good playing stance and when he can get his hands on a rushing defender, he will lock them in and win the battle. He punches quickly into the chest of a rushing defender and keeps his hands outside. Fruhmorgen had a host of blocks like the one below.
Fruhmorgen also had a couple of great plays where he showed solid technique both in getting to the second level and in plays where he had to pull.
Fruhmorgen, however, does not have great athleticism and does not move very quickly. He struggles with fast rushers and if he does not initially get hands on the defender he struggles to catch up. He struggles a bit with his quickness out of his stance, as evident below.
Fruhmorgen also needs to work on his pass protection and his agility, but those are things that he will develop as he goes through his junior and senior years of high school.
Fruhmorgen, like all of Plant, struggled to contain Jacob Pugh. “Number 16 (Jacob Pugh), the one going to Florida State, is a really good player. I struggled a bit with him, but I thought I did well at times – the best I could do,” Frehmorgen said. “I thought I did well overall. I am disappointed that we didn’t play the best that we could.”
Fruhmorgen, as he develops, is going to be a prospect to watch. Fruhmorgen may be a better guard at the next level. If he were to play in the SEC, he lacks the speed to contain speedy rushers. However, Fruhmorgen plays with great energy and has good technique and is deserving of a Florida offer.
