Florida Gators center commit Brett Heggie (6-4, 290, Mount Dora, FL High) was one of three Gators commits to visit Florida this past weekend, and he enjoyed his time in Gainesville.
“It was a great official,” Heggie said. “I got to spend a lot of time talking with the coaches and hanging out with them. I got to tour everything and eat a lot. The food was great and I got to spend a lot with the players. I’ve been committed for a long time but I really only knew a handful of them, so it was nice to hang out with them. They were all pretty good dudes. It was fun and it’s exciting.”
Heggie said the food was one of the best parts of the trip and he had several choices for his top meal in Gainesville.
“Saturday night we had crab legs and steak, so that was good,” he said when asked what the best food was. “We had Four Rivers for lunch one day. We had seafood the first night. The food was phenomenal all weekend.”
The Florida Gators commit was hosted by another center this weekend, but he spent a lot of time around the offensive linemen during his official visit.
“T.J. McCoy was my host this weekend,” Heggie said. “I spent a lot of time with Tyler Jordan too. All of those guys were saying that Florida is a great university and that it’s a lot of fun playing for this staff. They said there is a lot of positive energy around the program heading into next season.”
Florida Gators offensive line coach Mike Summers and Heggie watched film together and had several discussions during the official visit.
“Coach Summers and I have a great relationship and we talk on a weekly basis so we were just catching up on some stuff,” he said. “He’s excited for me to get up there and I’m going to try and get up there for Session A this summer so I can adjust to the playbook and the schedule. They want me to be able to contribute as much as possible next year.”
Heggie also had several chances to sit down and talk with Florida Gators head coach Jim McElwain during the weekend and it was relaxing conversation according to the offensive lineman.
“Coach Mac and I talked and it was just laid back stuff,” Heggie said. “We were just laughing and eating most of the time. Coach Mac is another coach that I have a great relationship with and we talked a lot throughout this visit. He said that he heard that I had a great week at Under Armour.”
Since Heggie has been a solid commit for sometime now, he spent a majority of his time recruiting others to join in Gainesville. One of his targets was offensive lineman Landon Dickerson.
“I’ve known Landon since this summer and we were on the same team at Under Armour, so we have a great relationship with each other,” he said of Landon Dickerson. “I spent a lot of time with him this weekend and we hung out a lot. I know he great visit and a great time. I know Florida made a great push for him but he’s going to go ahead and finish off his official visits and then make a decision. I’m excited for him.”
Offensive lineman John Simpson was another top target for Heggie and he thinks the Gators also have a shot with him.
“I got to talk to John some and we hung out,” Heggie said of John Simpson. “I know he’s going to take some other officials but I know he liked Coach Summers a lot. I’m excited to see where he decides to go.”
Heggie was also able to meet fellow Florida Gators commit Jawaan Taylor during the official visit and the two have a pretty good relationship between them.
“I talked to Jawaan when he was actually committed to Miami,” he said. “When he committed to Florida we continued to talk but this was the first time I got to meet him and we acted like we knew each other for a year or two. He’s a really good guy and he’s a big dude. I’m excited for him and it’s exciting for us.”
Really underrated OL. He is gonna be 2nd string right away and I love that he plays Center and Guard(maybe Tackle too).
