Friday Night Frenzy recap preseason: Florida Gators recruiting

It’s that time of the year again where the Friday Night Lights are bright and prospects all across the country are trying to shine on the field to impress college coaches and win a state championship ring before heading to college.

Like the past years Gator Country is going to do a preview every Thursday for all of the Florida Gators recruiting commits and on Monday we will do a full recap including stats and notes from the past weeks games.

This year we are going to also to name a player of the week from the commits games.

This week was full of preseason games for most of these prospects while the rest of the prospects will start up their season soon.

High School Recap

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Receiver Ja’Marr Chase- Chase had 7 catches for 264 yards and three touchdowns

Athlete Amari Burney (6-1, 215, Clearwater, FL. Calvary Christian)

Result: Calvary Christian lost to Berkeley Prep 20-18 on Friday night.

Game Stats: N/A

Notes: Because it was a preseason game, Burney’s defensive stats are not available.


Receiver Ja’Marr Chase (6-1, 195, Metairie, LA. Archbishop Rummel)

Result: Archbishop defeated Bourgeois in a scrimmage.

Game Stats: Chase had 7 catches for 264 yards and three touchdowns

Notes: Chase didn’t play the whole game since it was a scrimmage.


Running back Iverson Clement (5-11, 199, Mount Holly, NJ. Rancocas Valley)

Result: N/A

Game Stats:

Notes: Rancocas Valley doesn’t start play for another two weeks.


Receiver Jacob Copeland (6-0, 192, Pensacola, FL. Escambia)

Result: Escambia defeated Pensacola Catholic 14-13.

Game Stats: Copeland had two touchdowns and over 70 yards receiving.

Notes: Copeland caught the game-winning touchdown with seconds to go in the game.


Quarterback Matt Corral (6-2, 196, Long Beach, CA. Poly)

Result: N/A

Notes: Long Beach Poly doesn’t start play for another two weeks.


Offensive lineman Curtis Dunlap (6-4, 368, Bradenton, FL. IMG Academy)

Result: IMG defeated Carol City 41-22 on Friday night.

Game Stats: N/A

Notes: Dunlap and the IMG offense got off to a slow start but finished strong.


Receiver Corey Gammage (6-2, 188, Delray Beach, FL. Atlantic)

Result: N/A

Notes: Atlantic doesn’t start play until next week. 


Tight end Dante Lang (6-5, 220, Boca Raton, FL. High)

Result: Boca Raton defeated Parkland Douglas 21-0.

Game Stats: Lang had a touchdown in the win.

Notes: This was the first game for Lang to play tight end.


Running back Dameon Pierce (5-11, 205, Bainbridge, GA. High)

Result: N/A

Game Stats:

Notes: Bainbridge doesn’t start play until next week.


Tight end Kyle Pitts (6-5, 235, Warminster, PA. Archbishop Wood)

Result: N/A

Notes: Archbishop doesn’t start play for two weeks.


Linebacker David Reese (6-2, 213, Vero Beach, FL. High)

Result: Vero Beach defeated Viera 42-30.

Game Stats: N/A

Notes: Vero Beach came from behind after trailing by 14 to win the game.


Defensive back Randy Russell (5-11, 180, Miami, FL. Carol City)

Result: IMG defeated Carol City 41-22 on Friday night.

Game Stats: Russell had five tackles and two pass break-ups in the game.

Notes: Russell made several big plays in the game including almost having an interception in the game.


Receiver Tyquan Thornton (6-3, 165, Miami, FL. Booker T. Washington)

Result: Booker T. lost to American Heritage 42-27 on Friday night.

Game Stats: Thornton had a 33-yard touchdown catch in the loss.

Notes: Thornton had at least two catches for 92 yards.


Defensive end Taylor Upshaw (6-5, 240, Bradenton, FL. Braden River)

Result: Braden River defeated Lehigh 21-14.

Notes: Upshaw and the rest of the Braden River defense only gave up 51 rushing yards.

Receiver Jalynn Williams (5-10, 188, St. Petersburg, FL. High)

Result: St. Petersburg defeated Northeast 28-7.

Game Stats: Williams had an 8-yard touchdown run.

Notes: Williams played a lot of quarterback in the game.

Cornerback Divaad Wilson (6-0, 180, Miami, FL. Northwestern)

Result: Northwestern defeated Rickards 53-14.

Game Stats: Wilson had an interception on Friday.
