Florida Gators football notebook, Callaway status

DESTIN — Florida Gators star receiver Antonio Callaway is not enrolled in Summer A classes at the University of Florida, according to Jim McElwain. Speaking at the SEC spring meetings McElwain initially answered a question regarding the status of Treon Harris and Antonio Callaway saying, “same deal.” When asked directly if Callaway was taking classes in the first Summer session, — Summer A — McElwain responded, “no, not right now.”

Neither player has been around the team since January. Gainesville attorney Huntley Johnson released a statement in March, saying Callaway was being suspended for a violation of the UF Student Code of Conduct.

“That’s being handled,” McElwain said of the situation.

Three injury updates
On a lighter note, McElwain updated the status of three injured players on Tuesday.

Linebacker Alex Anzalone, (shoulder) receiver Brandon Powell (foot) and offensive lineman Martez Ivey (shoulders) have all been cleared for contact. Of course, given that the team is in the strength and conditioning portion of the offseason, there is not contact or football practice currently going on.

“They’ve been cleared to do everything,” McElwain said. “Right now there’s obviously no contact. It will be no different than what we did even with Antonio [Morrison] a year ago. You still have to test it before you throw them out on Saturday, but everything’s been going great.”

Powell has been dealing with a foot issue that began when he enrolled early as a freshman. The issue continues to pop back up, but McElwain hopes a wardrobe change will alleviate the issue.

“He’s got a new set of shoes,” said McElwain. “I took every other shoe out of his locker.”

Nick de la Torre
A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
