Florida Gators after Auburn athlete commit

The Florida Gators are trying to flip several prospects from other schools including one from their rivals backyard. Earlier this month recruiting coordinator Drew Hughes visited Auburn athlete commit D’Anfernee McGriff (6-3, 225, Tallahassee, FL Leon) and the visit went well.

“Coach Hughes came by to see me the first week he was able to,” McGriff said. “It went really well. I was glad to see him and glad that he was still recruiting me to Florida.”

Hughes didn’t have much new to say to McGriff but he wanted to make sure the Auburn commit knew the Gators were still interested in him.

“He was just basically telling me that Florida was still an option for me and he was telling me about the new coaches,” McGriff expounded. “He was telling me that Coach McElwain was going to be recruiting me still and that he wanted me to visit them.”

McGriff has done some research on new Gators head coach Jim McElwain and is impressed with McElwain’s offensive history.

“Coach McElwain has a good past history of putting up big numbers on offense,” McGriff said. “He has done some good things on offense and had a lot of success so I guess he knows what he’s talking about on offense.”

Auburn still remains home for McGriff but he did leave the door cracked for two other schools that are recruiting him.

“I’m still 100 percent to Auburn but I’m keeping my options open,” McGriff said. “I’m still listening to other schools like Florida and Louisville. Those are really the only three schools I’m hearing from right now.”

Florida will have at least one opportunity to sway McGriff and that one opportunity could lead to a second opportunity.

“Coach McElwain is coming for an in-home visit in January but we haven’t scheduled it yet,” McGriff said. “The only official visit I have scheduled right now is to Auburn but I might take an official to Florida too.”

INSIDERS TAKE: McGriff is being recruited to Florida as an athlete and he’s very interested in what Florida has to offer because of the need for playmakers on offense. I expect McGriff to take an official to Florida.
