Sunday is turning out to be a great day to commit to the Florida Gators as Florida picked their third commitment of the day when quarterback Feleipe Franks (6-6, 203, Crawfordville, FL Wakulla) committed to the Gators.
“It’s great to be a Florida Gators,” Franks tweeted. “#Committed.”
Franks, who is rated as one of the top quarterbacks in the country, backed off of his commitment to LSU last week after visiting the Gators for the FAU game and visiting them three of the last four weeks.
Saturday night was the latest visit to Florida for Franks and he and the rest of the world witnessed Treon Harris struggle. That had to lead Franks to believe that he could compete for playing time next year as a true freshman.
Franks is an Army All-American and will enroll at Florida in January. He joins fellow quarterback early enrollee Kyle Trask as quarterbacks for the class of 2016 for the Gators.
It’s still a big question mark whether or not Franks will be able to play as a true freshman, as the quarterback has all of the tools at 6-6, but does struggle some with mechanics. That’s something Florida Gators offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier and Jim McElwain will work on once he arrives in Gainesville.
The key is that McElwain and Nussmeier both like tall quarterbacks and that’s something Franks brings to the table. He will have all spring to work on his mechanics as well as learn the playbook.
This season Franks has completed 57 percent of his passes for 2,347 yards while throwing 30 touchdowns and just two interceptions for his Wakulla team that is now in the semifinals of the playoffs.
The Gators now have 26 commitments for the class of 2016. Stay tuned to Gator Country for much more on Franks’ commitment to Florida.
