Edwards down to four including the Florida Gators

DBU, as the Florida Gators are often referred to, is in need of several defensive backs in the Class of 2017, as the numbers are getting short at the position.

On Monday night, linebackers coach Randy Shannon paid a visit to a defensive back when he visited Brian Edwards (6-3, 195, Hollywood, FL. Miramar) at his home.

“It went good with Coach Shannon, we had some fun together,” Edwards said. “We got all of my mom’s questions answered and we were just outside talking for a minute. I got to know coach a lot and coach got to know my mom. Really we’re learning about how Florida would go if I went there.”

Shannon was explaining to Edwards that the Gators are a good opportunity for him as a player and also a chance for him to win a championship.

“He told me to come up to Florida and make an impact early for them,” Edwards said. “He said that I could compete with the other guys coming in and be in a great environment. He said that I would be able to compete for an SEC Championship and that’s a big thing.

During the visit Shannon brought up the chance for early playing time to Edwards as the cornerback says that will factor into his decision.

“They see me a corner,” Edwards said. “He told me that I have a huge opportunity to come in and play early there. He said it’s all up to me because of how I come in and perform. It was nice to hear that I do have that opportunity to come in and perform though. I take that in huge consideration.”

Monday was the first time for Edwards’ mom to meet Shannon and she came away impressed by the Gators.

“My mom thought the visit was good and she really likes Florida,” he said. “She likes that it’s close to where we live so she’s able to drive instead of fly. When it’s time for me to come home then I can. She can also come to all of my games.”

During the summer Edwards expressed a lot of interest in the Gators after he picked up an offer and he says Florida still has his attention.

“I have a big interest in Florida, I just took it down to four schools that I like,” Edwards said. “I like Florida, Colorado, Miami and Louisville. I’m going to Colorado this weekend and then the rest of them will be in January. I’m planning to come to Florida for the first weekend after the dead period.”

The Gators and the other three teams will have to wait awhile before knowing where Edwards will attend school as the cornerback plans to take this down to the wire.

“I’m going to wait until signing day before I make my decision,” he said. “I want to take my time so that I make the best decision for me.”

INSIDERS TAKE: From the sound of things from Edwards and people around him the Gators are in a good spot. Edwards is a long corner that fits exactly what Torrian Gray likes in his defensive backs. Randy Shannon also has a great relationship with him.
