Duke Dawson to return to Florida Gators for senior season

The Florida Gators defense received good news on Wednesday when junior cornerback Duke Dawson announced he would be returning for his senior season in 2017.

Dawson, from Cross City, got his Florida career started off with a bang returning an interception for a touchdown in his very first game. Dawson played in all 27 games the last two seasons, starting seven games this past season at nickel. He tallied 24 tackles, 3.5 for a loss, one interception, seven pass breakups and had one forced fumble.

Dawson has played all over the secondary for the Gators in three seasons and will be a key component of the Florida defense that will have a lot of holes to fill in 2017.

Dawson is the first of several draft eligible juniors that Florida will wait to hear from on their draft decisions. Defensive tackle Caleb Brantley, linebacker Alex Anzalone as well as cornerbacks Jalen Tabor and Quincy Wilson could all leave for the NFL this year. Offensive tackle David Sharpe has already announced his intentions to forego his senior season.

A South Florida native, Nick developed a passion for all things sports at a very young age. His love for baseball was solidified when he saw Al Leiter’s no-hitter for the Marlins live in May of 1996. He was able to play baseball in college but quickly realized there isn’t much of a market for short, slow outfielders that hit around the Mendoza line. Wanting to continue with sports in some capacity he studied journalism at the University of Central Florida. Nick got his first start in the business as an intern for a website covering all things related to the NFL draft before spending two seasons covering the Florida football team at Bleacher Report. That job led him to GatorCountry. When he isn’t covering Gator sports, Nick enjoys hitting way too many shots on the golf course, attempting to keep up with his favorite t.v. shows and watching the Heat, Dolphins and Marlins.
