Coney set to officially the Florida Gators

Linebacker Tevon Coney (6-0, 221, Palm Beach Gardens, FL. High) has been saying for a month now that he was going to take his official visit to the Florida Gators soon and would announce shortly after that.

Well Coney has finally decided on when he will be in Gainesville and it will be soon.

“I’m taking my official to Florida for the LSU game,” Coney told Gator Country. “I’m coming with my mom, my dad and maybe a friend. Right now that’s my last planned official visit before I make my commitment. I might take more after I make my decision but I’m not sure.”

With a decision coming shortly after an October 11th visit to Gainesville, Coney has a very particular list of things he wants to see from the Gators to help him make a decision.

“I’m going to announce my decision probably a week or so after the Florida/LSU game,” Coney said. “I want to make sure that I get up to Florida to see the linebackers live and in action and see Coach [D.J.] Durkin coaching so that’s why I want to take the official visit first before I make my decision.”

Less than a month from making a decision Coney says that two teams lead for him as he likes how both teams are playing right now.

“Florida and Notre Dame are still tied at the top,” Coney said. “I think both defenses have been playing well this season. Florida’s defense let up a little bit last week against Alabama but played good.  Notre Dame had a bye week but they have been playing well too.”

Coney has had to speed his process up a lot because he found that he will now be able to be an early enrollee.

“I’m enrolling in January so I have take all of my officials before January,” Coney said. “I’m all set to go early to college so that’s what I plan to do. I got the all clear a few weeks ago from my school.”

When Coney talks to Florida he usually talks to defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin but occasionally he talks to head coach Will Muschamp who reminds him of which state he’s from.

“I talk to Coach Muschamp sometimes but mainly I talk to coach Durkin,” Coney said. “Coach Muschamp mainly tells me that Florida is a great program and that I should rep my state. He says that I should come to Florida and do all of my great things there and be a Gator.”

Durkin has a slightly different message to Coney as he talks more about how the linebacker will fit into the Florida Gators defense.

“Coach Durkin tells me he wants me to be his MIKE linebacker in the class,” Coney said. “Coach Durkin wants me to come in and be the No. 2 linebacker and start taking reps with the second team and try to play my freshman year.”

INSIDER TAKE: Coney’s official visit to Florida will be huge as he wants to make sure he can get playing time at Florida. I think he really wants to be a Gator but wants to make sure that Florida gives him the best opportunity to succeed as Coney is a smart man and does his homework but Notre Dame has also done a great job of recruiting him and I know he likes the Irish a lot too.
