Florida Gators sophomore receiver Antonio Callaway has been cleared by the University of Florida to play in the Gators’ season opener this Saturday.
Head coach Jim McElwain announced Monday that he learned of Callaway’s future last Friday, 10 business days after Callaway was found “not responsible” in a Title IX investigation. Callaway was originally suspended on Jan. 27 and remained away from the team until fall camp opened up on August 4.
Callaway is the lone proven returning offensive threat for Florida this year. He led the team with 678 yards receiving and with four touchdowns. Callaway also returned two punts for touchdowns.
Other suspensions
McElwain reported that freshmen receivers Tyrie Cleveland and Rick Wells would not be available for the first game. The duo was arrested in July for firing BB guns into a dorm on campus.
All-American cornerback Jalen Tabor and C’yontai Lewis are also suspended for the season opener after a fight during practice.
McElwain also said a senior player “made choices” and would not be available for the opener, but he did not specify which senior would miss the game.
