Why we are wearing white Saturday

 Aug 28  |  0 Comments  |  General

Sometimes I wonder if we’ve forgotten the true colors for University of Florida. They are still orange and blue, right?

Yet we seldom see orange anymore, especially in team unis.

Lately I’ve seen black shirts and hats, off-orange and off-blue gear, and I think I saw somebody wearing the dreaded red with a UF logo on it the other day.

Now we’re having a “White Out” Saturday for the 2008 opener, as requested by Urban Meyer, who last year called for a “Blue Out” at the Tennessee game.

This time, however, the color—if you can call white a “color”—has a special meaning. It’s a “Gators White Out Cancer.” It’s being held in conjunction with an awareness program by Shands.

Cancer has touched the lives of us all in some way, especially Urban’s. His mother, Gisela, died of the disease. His father recently had cancer surgery. And so in calling for the “White Out Cancer,” Meyer has made it much more than just about football.

As someone who lost a sister to cancer and watched his mother battle it twice, I’ll be donning my white shirt on Saturday in memory of them both. On behalf of Urban, we here at Gator Country invite you to bring out your white Saturday.

Besides, it’s going to be hot and you’ll not only look cool, but feel cooler.

About Buddy's Blog »

Buddy's Blog is a regular postcard from Gator Country Executive Editor Buddy Martin written behind the scenes of a college sports setting. Buddy's dispatches will come from everywhere -- the press boxes of the Southeastern Conference and the halls of the UF Athletic Department; the book-signing trail at various stores in Florida and the Koffee Klatches at various spots in Ocala and Gainesville; regular stops to the chair of B.J. The Barber in Gainesville and Diane The Hair Stylist in Ocala; an occasional snippet from favorite restaurants like The Yearling in Cross Creek and Mark's Prime Steakhouse in Ocala/Gainesville; and many points in between. Warning: If you don't like strong coffee, offbeat stories and strong opinions, you might want to pass on Buddy's Blog.
