On the road to Knoxville

 Sep 20  |  0 Comments  |  General

Ah, now the coach is talking smack.

Today’s game will be a chance for Phil Fulmer to back up his statement that his Vols are going to “kick Florida’s butt.”

OK, but on the other hand, if they don’t, Fulmer may be out on is butt after the season, having lost to the Gators four straight times.

This series usually generates emotional responses, as it did last week when Brandon Spikes reminded everybody that in 2007 that the Vols had “quit.”

The now-graduated Derek Baldry, a former Army Ranger, reported last year that on an extra point near the end of the game, won by Florida 59-20, an unidentified

Tennessee player told him he was going to pull up on the play. And he did.

When that word leaked out a about the Tennessee “quitter,” it quickly made its way back to Knoxville.

Maybe that was enough to motivate the Vols, who played their way to Atlanta and lost to LSU in a decent showing, 21-14.

So will the words of Spikes and Baldry come back to haunt Urban Meyer?

Maybe. However, Florida has more speed and a better team.

That’s why I expect them to pull away in the fourth quarter for a 38-17 victory.

Actions, not words do the talking.

Buddy's Blog is a regular postcard from Gator Country Executive Editor Buddy Martin written behind the scenes of a college sports setting. Buddy's dispatches will come from everywhere -- the press boxes of the Southeastern Conference and the halls of the UF Athletic Department; the book-signing trail at various stores in Florida and the Koffee Klatches at various spots in Ocala and Gainesville; regular stops to the chair of B.J. The Barber in Gainesville and Diane The Hair Stylist in Ocala; an occasional snippet from favorite restaurants like The Yearling in Cross Creek and Mark's Prime Steakhouse in Ocala/Gainesville; and many points in between. Warning: If you don't like strong coffee, offbeat stories and strong opinions, you might want to pass on Buddy's Blog.
