Gator Coaches on Recruiting Trail

- Senior Columnist  |  January 22, 2007

Florida had barely completed its’ biggest recruiting weekend of the season when the Florida coaches boarded the plane and flew to Panama City for an in-home visit with Bay wide receiver commit Bert Reed, who had returned late Saturday with his Tornadoes’ teammates from a basketball tournament in Marion County.

“Coach (Urban) Meyer, Coach (Dan) Mullen, and Coach (Chuck) Heater stopped by about 40 minutes ago,” Reed said at 9:30 Sunday evening. “It was good visit because Coach Meyer and Coach Mullen had never met my Mom (Veronica) before. It was their first time meeting.”

“I knew that she would like Coach Meyer and she did,” he continued. “He’s real straightforward. She carried on a better conversation than I’d hoped about my role at Florida. He explained everything that is going to happen. It helped me a lot for my Mom to understand. My Mom explained that she never really had a college, but sort of adopted Florida. She wasn’t a strong fan, but she always liked them. We all watched the game together with my step-father and family. After this (visit) things are really rollin’ now. You know? It’s exciting. You can feel it.”

“She really has liked Coach Heater better than anybody because she felt like he was the one coach recruiting me who was real. She really likes him. I like Coach Heater too, but I’ve got to keep him away when we’re playing basketball,” Reed said laughing. “We lose every time he watches us play. He’s killing us.”

At Belleview High School, the Tornadoes lost to Miami Pace by 10 on Friday night. It was not a good day at all for Bay as they were missing head coach Matt Anderson, who was out sick. Saturday proved to be a different story. The Tornadoes beat Auburndale by 11 points.
