Zunino wins Golden Spikes Award

USA Baseball named former Florida Gators catcher Mike Zunino as the 2012 recipient of the Golden Spikes Award on Friday. The award is annually given to the nation’s top amateur baseball player. Zunino is the first Gators’ player to win in USA Baseball’s 35 years of presenting the award, which was broadcasted live on the MLB Network.

“It’s a privilege, I’m just extremely honored to be here in the presence of two other great baseball players,” Zunino told MLB.com before the award was announced.

Other finalists were former Stanford pitcher Mark Appel and North Carolina State pitcher Carlos Rodon. Florida defeated Rodon and the Wolfpack in the Gainesville Super Regional before ending the season with consecutive losses in the 2012 College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
